Part One: We Meet

You didn't know what to say. What could you say? Here you were, next to this tall, dark skinned, brown eyed, muscular, attractive looking man, who had just asked you a question. One that had already slipped your mind. What was that question again? How could you forget? Now, the more you thought about it, the less you could remember it. What on earth was the matter with you? Did you drink too much ale? No... that couldn't be it. This was your first glass.

The male next to you cleared his throat and rose his eyebrow, very patiently awaiting your answer. Not remembering what he'd said, you gave an awkward smile and rose your glass before taking a large drink of it. The male knit his eyebrows together in wonder of what you were doing before he asked his question again.

"Is this seat next you taken?" his voice was soft, but he spoke up so you could hear. You shook your head and gestured next to you for him to take it. The man sat and shifted until he was comfortable in his seat. You stared at your hands, which drummed against the table. It was just awkward silence between you two, with the exception of the pub's music. Your eyes occasionally darted over to him, observing his white robes that had an accent of dark blue on the inside, a hood covering his eyes. When he'd glance over to see what you were doing you focused back on your hands.

Occasionally you'd reach up to your hat when he or no one else was looking to made sure you long hair remained tucked in it. You knew not many women, who weren't prostitutes, came into this bar, you were pretty sure you were the only woman who had ever entered this bar on her own. You didn't come here to "be one of the guys", you came here because you can't stand being stuck inside your small little shop for ten more seconds, sewing Patriots' and Red Coats' uniforms, fixing their shoes, do every little order they told you to. It was driving you mad.

So you decided to take a break and go out. But there aren't any places for a woman alone to just go out. And that's when you made the choice to go to a bar, in a disguise. And that's what made you nervous because if your hat just so happened to fall off, or someone looked too closely at your features, or listened to the pitch of your voice, you would be in terrible trouble. Just thinking of what would happen scared you, so you continued to stay silent, drinking the ale in front of you. The stranger next to you remained silent, but was turned on his chair so he was now observing the bar, which he seemed to be doing with much focus.

And it was like that for the next couple hours, just you drinking, him surveying, and the music playing. Though, in boredom, you still glance over at him to swoon at his features. What was a guy like him doing in a place like this? You sigh and, just as your about to take a drink, a bar fight between two burly men starts behind you. You glance over your shoulder to see one of them men come stumbling towards you from the other man pushing him. Before you can do anything to move, he's slammed into your back, making you wince and shout in pain.

You grip onto the counter top, so that you won't drop to the ground like the fool who hit you. You didn't notice that when you got hit, the jerking of your body also happened to throw your hat off your head, your _____ colored locks tumbling free. The bar has gone silent due to all eyes on you, the men surprised at seeing a woman in here, especially one that had been in here for a while. You freeze, eyes wide, cursing repeatedly in your head.

"Oi! What's a woman doin' in 'ere?" one of the drunkards shout. The bartender looks at you and comes marching over, grabbing your arm and raising his eyebrow.

"Wha' do you think you doin'?" he growled, too close for comfort, his breath rancid.

"Sir, I do give you my sincere apologies." you say, trying to not gag from his smell. "I-I just was looking for someone?" you lie, the man not buying it.

"Lookin' for someone as a man? You think I'm stupid?" he shook you a little bit and that's when the man who was observing the bar stepped in between you two.

"She was looking for me. I told her to meet me here, but..." he glanced back at you. "In a disguise." he added, the bartender scoffing.

"Well now you and your boney lass can get ya' arses out!" he pointed at the door, the hooded male gently grabbing you and pulling you out the door. As soon as you exited the bar, you let out a large sigh of relief and leaned against the nearest building once you were far enough away from the bar.

"Thank you." you extend your hand to the man, who slowly extended his hand, as if remembering how to shake hands. "My name is (your name) Wright." you say, him nodding as he pulled his hand away.

"Nice to meet you Ms. Wright. My name is Connor Kenway." he said, standing in front of you as you stopped using the building for support.

"Oh, you can just call me (y/n). I don't really use my last name much." you replied, rubbing your hands together from the cold night.

"May I ask you something?" he said, looking at your hands as you nod. "What were you doing in that bar? Why wasn't your husband with you?" he asked, you becoming flustered.

"U-uh... well..." you stutter, trying to think of a response that doesn't sound stupid. "First, I don't exactly have a husband." Connor rose his eyebrow at that statement, crossing his arms. "And second... I was just so tired of being stuck inside and working. All the stress must have gone to my head... or... something." you mumbled, realizing how dumb the idea was now that your head was cleared.

"May I ask something else?" Connor said again, you smiling slightly and nodding.

"You don't have to ask to ask something Connor." you chuckled, though it stopped as you feel your cheeks heat up from Connor stepping closer.

"Why do you not have a husband?" he asked.

"Wow. You are indeed a straight shooter." you murmur, rubbing the back of your head.

"If it is too personal, please, do not answer." He said before you could say any more. You shake you head and roll your eyes.

"I was supposed to have one but it was a lie. He was in it for the money, so before we made any plans, I took the first boat to America. And now I have a successful business. Though I feel it will be run into the ground with all the damn taxes." the last part was more of just a thought out loud, but not loud enough for Connor to hear.

"Well, my apologies for that." he said, dropping his arms to his side. You smile a bit more and bite your lip.

"Connor... may I ask you something now?" he nods, rather than you. "Why did you help me?" he shifted his weight.

"Because an innocent such as you should not get hurt." he replied, you, for some reason, disappointed at the answer.

"Well... for the third time... thank you very much." you grin before rubbing your arms. "It's rather cold out, so I'd like to get home. It was nice to meet you Connor Kenway." you are about to slide past him when he stops you.

"Wait." he said, you freezing in place. "I will walk you home. It is late out and you never know what is lurking out here." he whispered, you nodding and beginning to walk, him following. He escorted you to your small shop, your home right above it. You were a little cheerless as you walked up to the door, Connor right behind you.

"Well..." you place your hand on the doorknob, looking at Connor's shoes before his face. "Goodbye." you smile, turning the knob and walking inside.

"(y/n)?" he called before you could shut the door.

"Yes?"

"I'd like to see you again. Not in a disguise." he said, your cheeks lighting up bright red, thinking he meant it the wrong way.

"Uh... Connor... I just met you." you awkwardly say, him raising his eyebrow.

"So you would not like to meet again?" he asked, you laughing awkwardly.

"Oh! I thought you meant... you know." you said, making a certain expression, not wanting to say the word. When his expression didn't change, you sighed and nodded. "I'd love to see you again Connor. Tomorrow? Or sometime this week." the smallest smile crosses his lips as he nodded.

"See you tomorrow, or sometime this week." he simply stated before turning and walking away.

"Quite the meeting." you mumble as you walk upstairs to go to sleep.
