Description I'd be pretty if I'd just smile
If I'd cut my hair a certain way
And cover myself up in that chemical crap you call make-up
But did you ever think that just maybe...
I don't wanna be pretty
That I just wanna be me
Who cares if no one ever calls me beautiful
Who cares if I'm never asked to dance
Hell I don't even know how to dance anyway
I don't care how the world sees me
I only care how I see me
And I think there's nothing wrong with the girl in the mirror
Sure she doesn't smile much but that's cause she's going through hell
Her face may look plain without any make-up
But that's just the way I like it
An old pair of jeans
The first t-shirt could find
My hair in a braid
I'm ready to go
To where no one cares just what I look like
Least of all me
It's a barn full of horses
That's where I choose to spend my days
Where no one cares about what I wear
Where I never have to hear "I'd be pretty if I'd just..."

I have no problem with others being how they want. I don't like when people tell me that I should change this or that about myself to be pretty in their eyes. I'm not ugly I don't need make up to fix anything I like how I look just the way I am that's my point.

I don't even want to know why so many like this ''literature''. To me it seems more like an excerpt from a 9-year old's diary.

You're the one being "edgy" about this. She is letting others do what the want, she's just saying that she doesn't want to follow the crowd like some sort of sheep and wear make up. And what right do you have to call her "ugly"?

Seriously? Thats all you can up with?
If you want to argue your point at least come up with a valid point and be able to stand your ground. Not just make lousy remarks like that. Sorry but thats just lame.

No, I don't log in that often. I was in the middle of my exams, meaning I was spending my time studying, not thinking of a reply for you. That takes me all of two seconds.

Not to be mean. But just saying, even if you were amabassador of the world, you wouldn't have any more rights to call sombody ugly then a normal person (not that anybody should say that in general) sorry not trying to be mean just saying.

What? Who're you to assume I'm a troll? You probably don't even know what trolling is other than the superstitious 'memes' you know today. Get off your high horse. I'm just not trying to debate with a fool who didn't even bother reading in between the lines of my post.

A troll is someone who posts specifically to aggravate people. To put a more general term for it, a prick.

Who are you to judge someone on aesthetics?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KowalskiComrade In reply to battlebrothertherix [2012-11-19 19:52:29 +0000 UTC]

I'm not judging on aesthetics, I'm telling the author of this literary 'art' that make up is an essential part in human life. What? It's not like make up is the ONLY façade which humans use to make themselves appear better towards society; if one were to make a anger-filled poem with crude word usage for EVERY façade humanity has created, then deviantart would be a place of hatred and social outcasts.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Ant1tti In reply to KowalskiComrade [2012-11-20 03:37:41 +0000 UTC]

Make up is hardly an essential part of human life. Unless you have some enlightened understanding of what life is that I don't, as far as I'm concerned it's simply continuing to breathe, eat, drink, and sleep. Beyond that life is what you make of it. If you want to wear masks to hide yourself from society because you can't face what is in the mirror, that's your prerogative as a person. Just as it's the author's right to write a poem about the unfortunate peer pressure to pretty oneself up because it's what others want or need to make themselves feel better.

Also I would hardly agree that it's an anger-filled poem. It resonates sadness more to me than it does anger. It sounds like a person sad that the world expects or requires you to wear the mask because it's what "they" want even if you don't want it. Not to mention the poem sounds happy and content near the end when speaking about the horses which help calm her and the resolution to let herself be ok with being who she is.

And I wouldn't be bothered by poems for every facade humanity has created, because it just means people are questioning why we created them in the first place. It only sparks hatred and creates outcasts when people are unwilling to view it with an open mind and treat it with respect and kindness even if it doesn't agree with their personal views. Your hostility generated responses, but hardly constructive ones. Nor did it portray your personality in a positive light. Not because of your disagreement, but because of your own anger toward the piece. If all you wanted to say was that you think make-up isn't a negative thing, then say that in polite, intelligent, well constructed sentences and maybe you'll get people to listen. Or maybe they'll treat you the same way you wanted to treat the author of the piece. Who knows? That's part of being a free person, you aren't required to be good, you still have the choice to be a dick.

How is make-up an essential part of human life? Pretty much all males and some females go their entire lives without wearing make-up.

KowalskiComrade In reply to battlebrothertherix [2012-11-19 21:24:21 +0000 UTC]

Seriously? Did you not understand a SINGLE word what I said?

I'm arguing with fools here. I'm talking about the façades that humanity makes in order to appear appealing to others!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

battlebrothertherix In reply to KowalskiComrade [2012-11-19 21:26:33 +0000 UTC]

That façade is an illusion perpetrated by society. It's made by people like you insisting that perfect beauty is the only way to go, and people who conform to it are losing their freedom of choice.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KowalskiComrade In reply to battlebrothertherix [2012-11-19 21:39:33 +0000 UTC]

What? Hahahaha, oh wow.

Are you merely reading, but not understanding?

I'm not insisting perfect beauty is the only way to go; but it is the way that many people choose.

And how is CHOOSING something, losing one's freedom of choice? Beauty is a choice of lifestyle; just because you don't like it, doesn't mean you have to write hate-letters like these.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

battlebrothertherix In reply to KowalskiComrade [2012-11-19 21:43:55 +0000 UTC]

See, now you're not listening.
I'm saying that this society has made this idea of beauty the way people are meant to go. Look around you - 50% of adverts are beauty products. Girls are bought Barbies, boys are bought Action Man, from a young age. Barbie is a stick with boobs, and girls are brought up in an environment of them. boys are brought up with Action men, thus conferring onto them the ideal of physical strength and adventure. This is society and anyone who denies this is ousted by those who are part of it. That is what forces people into these 'moulds' and removes their freedom. It's not a choice, it's press-ganging.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KowalskiComrade In reply to battlebrothertherix [2012-11-19 21:49:21 +0000 UTC]

Ah. So you're telling that what most people want is not really what they want? Good luck convincing people that beauty, acceptance and health is not what they seek. Tell them that what they seek in life is to not give a damn about how they look and not to seek any way of making themselves more appealing.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

battlebrothertherix In reply to KowalskiComrade [2012-11-19 21:51:11 +0000 UTC]

See, you're conforming to it because society built itself that way.
I grow my hair long, and I don't give a damn what people say about me needing to get it cut. I look the way I want to, not the way other people want me to look.

KowalskiComrade In reply to battlebrothertherix [2012-11-19 21:56:55 +0000 UTC]

Woo, you go against the laws and rules of society and mustnow be banished

you are like one of the millions of guys who grow their hair long. It's part of society, whether you like it or not. Every thing you do and say is against society. There is no such thing as 'conforming to society'. You ARE part of the society, and gotta learn to deal with it. Live how you want to live, don't criticize how others live.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

battlebrothertherix In reply to KowalskiComrade [2012-11-19 22:05:39 +0000 UTC]

No. 'society' is the vast commonplace area. Listening to chart music and liking it. Following the stereotype. Looking like you do to appease others.

You don't see it because you're a part of it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

KowalskiComrade In reply to battlebrothertherix [2012-11-19 22:22:54 +0000 UTC]

Me? A part of it? Man, I'm the ugliest of them all, I don't even wear make up. But this is simply bigotry; it's meant to spread hatred to those who choose this lifestyle. Who're YOU to assume I'm following the stereotype? Maybe YOU are? Trying to be edgy by being a ''non-conformist''?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

battlebrothertherix In reply to KowalskiComrade [2012-11-19 22:25:06 +0000 UTC]

Name how you think I'm being a conformist then.

I agree completely.
I too feel the same about myself, that's why I wear the comfy old baggy clothes I do, and why I never wear make up. dressing up is just for fun, not for being pretty, and horses make better company than teens yacking in your ears about having to look better.
this poem strikes a chord in my heart,
and honestly, it would be so much better if people everywhere felt the same.
it's sad to see others strive so hard to look attractive for nothing.
personality is what counts.

So true.
I don't mind a little jewellery, as long as it's not making a show of itself; it should accentuate the person, not be an item on it's own. I detest make-up; it's just covering up real beauty, as anyone naturally as they are is infinitely more beautiful than slapping on a shed of make-up.

Oh my god this is yes. I can't tell you how much I see myself in this poetry...only instead of horses in a barn, it's a piano in a studio for me.

The rhythm is very good. For poetry you want to try and find a certain flow to it, one that helps highlight your point, and you've got it with this one.

Keep up the awesome!
