Description
I'd be pretty if I'd just smileIf I'd cut my hair a certain way
And cover myself up in that chemical crap you call make-up
But did you ever think that just maybe...
I don't wanna be pretty
That I just wanna be me
Who cares if no one ever calls me beautiful
Who cares if I'm never asked to dance
Hell I don't even know how to dance anyway
I don't care how the world sees me
I only care how I see me
And I think there's nothing wrong with the girl in the mirror
Sure she doesn't smile much but that's cause she's going through hell
Her face may look plain without any make-up
But that's just the way I like it
An old pair of jeans
The first t-shirt could find
My hair in a braid
I'm ready to go
To where no one cares just what I look like
Least of all me
It's a barn full of horses
That's where I choose to spend my days
Where no one cares about what I wear
Where I never have to hear "I'd be pretty if I'd just..."

Yes, I know what you mean. I just think sometimes people take being "all natural" as just fucking their bodies into oblivion by not taking care of themselves.
If you love your body you take care of it!

lol, no, you have no right to lecture anyone on how to take care of ones body. " I think I'm not going to binge/purge anymore.
I think I'll just never eat again.
I hope this works. "

I'm underweight, but not severely so.
I have an eating disorder.

People who are overweight have a eating disorder. People who are "unkept" may have a skin disorder so they can't wear make up or use fancy hair treatments. You are no better than anyone else and have no right to put anyone down.

I agree with a lot of this: no one should have to feel that they have to hide themselves or work so hard to look a particular way to be deamed acceptable by other people. Just being yourself is beautiful on its own. But I think that there's nothing wrong with concentrating your own style, because that's being you too. People should just be allowed look however the heck they want, and not feel bad for either wearing or not wearing make up.
That being said, this is a really great piece of poetry

While I do agree natural beauty shouldn't be abandoned, I don't like the black and white picture this poetry draws. Take the dancing line for example, one can assume that whenever there is a opportunity to dance it is a special occasion where you might enhance you appearance a little. Or maybe on a wedding?
The complete abandoning of styling is a little harsh to my mind.
Another thing is a cultural reason. For instance, there are native people with very special beauty standards, which are appalling for many westerners. I bet you heard of the plate in the lip or lengthening the neck by stapling rings. Or think of the Japanese Geishas with their white skin cover.
So the "Make-up" is our way to define our beauty. (Maybe?)
Just my two cents.
By the way, I prefer non-makeup as well, but I'd never dare to lifting myself above people who do, because humans are a cultural beeing and denying it is like denying your own nature.

I would disagree that it's black and white or emphasizes the complete abandoning of style. I see it more as venting at the peer pressure which REQUIRES styling. Sometimes its nice to just be what you want, not what others want for you, right? I'm sure the Japanese Geisha's have downtime, parts of the day they don't have to wear the make-up, the dress, the smile and can just be normal for a little bit.
I do agree that you don't HAVE to abandon styling, or never dress up. It's just something you do on your own terms, not on someone else's. Which is the point I believe the poem is trying to make. Though the author obviously knows more about her intent than I do.

OMG This describes me PERFECTLY. I refuse to wear makeup and am fine going out in jeans and a T-shirt! I hate it when people are all self conscience of their appearance and what others think of them. And to me, everyone is beautiful...unless they have an ugly personality.

My dad is always lecturing me on how I "don't care about [my] appearance" just because I don't want to straighten my hair everyday. I told him that I don't go to school or out in public to impress everyone else, and he actually had the nerve to say, "Well you should!"

I fell in love with a girl who didn't want to have to listen to people like this.
I understand the value of looks, but unless it's natural it doesn't mean anything to me. Fake, plastic, chemical, not my style.
A personality is what I look for - a like-mindedness...and I found her, and I'm glad I did. I wouldn't date one of the 'barbie dolls' I see around my school because that's all they are; plastic and aesthetic.

this is so adorable! In general, with any girl- anyone, really- this is how they ought to feel, so confident. And then of course reaching the end made me smile even more I used to just adore being at the closest stables, even if it was miles away. it's a great place to feel accepted ^-^

You can change, you don't have to care what people think of you. But you know what, it's up to YOU to change. If you really want to, you won't care what they think. To me...if someone is kind and likes me, then awesome, I have a new friend. But if someone doesn't like me, they aren't worth knowing. Honestly, society is shit. All of these double standards and crap. I hate judgemental people and do not appreciate being judged, but if I am I just say "oh well" because you have to remember if someone actually says mean things to you like "you're ugly" or something, they really have low self esteem themselves and aren't comfortable with themselves most of the time. It's up to you to change your way of thinking. (;

Keep going like that and you'll be fine. An attitude like that means you'll find yourself with a partner who thinks the same way, and those people are the best ones.

I really like this poem. I think many other people can relate too, with "swag" and "make-up". I also think its really sad that the people who really do become influenced and pressured are the people who don't know how to love themselves. So theyre trying to get other people to "love" them.
But amazing poem. I imagined myself when I was reading it. Except not a barn full of horses. More like a library full of books

This'd be me if you replace "Its a barn full of horses" with with something to do with studying and reading (plus drawing random stuff when I get the chance ^^"). I like it, its written well and from the heart. I don't normally read poems on DA but this one caught my eye. Nice work!

Stop being so darn edgy; let other people be how they want to be. Just because you're ugly and make up can't fix it, doesn't mean that make up is some ''chemical shit''.
