I love it. There's so much worry in Tseng's expression and Sephiroth has such a melancholic look, as if he keeps distant from everybody, only letting Tseng to be this close, and goddess, he missed it.

Thank you! If you would allow me to continue my musings - I think both of them are mature and strong both physically and emotionally. But Tseng allows himself to be weak or silly once in a while. A silly comment, a tasteless joke, unorthodox methods is what makes him feel like a person rather than a perfect machine. Sephiroth does not. He is so strict with himself that it finally breaks him. He pushes himself to where no-one has ever been before and there's no way back. And Tseng can only watch this with a worried look in his eyes.

My Tseng has a slightly sarcastic, often misplaced sense of humour. He will sass and deadpan everyone. I would say he is emotionally stronger than Sephiroth because although people have high expectations of him, it's nowhere near the same calibre Sephiroth has. And Tseng has a very tight knit unit around him. The Turks have been through everything together, they're like family. They're very close knit and often know when he needs them, even though he would never express this desire himself. Sephiroth does not have this. When it comes to the crux and he needs someone to tell him to snap out of it, he is alone. I live for the AU where he has one straight talking Turk by his side during the Nibelheim event ^^

Ah yes, Tseng's sense of humour, especially in CC is quite unique. He likes teasing people, he likes rubbing uncomfortable truth into other people's faces, but most of all, he likes to joke about things that are not to be joked about.
Tseng might be stronger, because of less traumatizing childhood, the fact that he feels that he belongs and he does have a high EQ. And just as you mentioned, he does have some sort of a family.
People develop sense of their own value till the age of 5, based on how their caregivers treat them. And it feels that Sephiroth has never experienced unconditional love, he was seen as valuable only when he performed well, and that's what pushes him to chase perfection.

i Always see them as having a kind of frenemy thing going on - one day enemies (in the sense of who runs the best department in Shinra) the next day bonding over their useless second in commands (Zack and Reno)

Have I mentioned I'm shippy trash? Picture the rivalry as being a cover up. When Lazard starts carping on about team building exercises Tseng and Sephiroth go for it, snickering to themselves because the company is basically giving them time off to be with each other.
