Description The boss at the top of the Waterall Stage in the 8bit Nintendo game Contra.

Made with PixelHobby beads. Exactly 60,000 beads; a full screenshot, plus a little extra added to the bottom (NES native screenshots are 57,344 pixels). Not made with Perler, Hama, Nabbi, etc., beads. Here's the company's web site:

This has been completed for over a year now, but I started assembling it over three years ago. That's how freaking long this thing took to make. Thirty baseplates, two thousand individual beads per baseplate. Here's a closeup macro picture of a single baseplate, so you can see what one looks like up close:

Dude! Do one of these from like the SNES like Street Fighter 2 or even better do a screen shot in pixel beads from a screen shot from Street Fighter 2 the Arcade version!!

Or do one of these from like a screen shot from Super Mario 64!!! That would be wicked!!!

This is the most amazing thing ever! I can't even imagine the satisfaction one must feel after finishing something with so many tiny pieces! I've wanted to do wall art for a long time but weaving seed beads together would be way too time consuming for something that size! Thanks for giving the company website! I never knew something like this existed! I actually bought mini mosaic tiles a few months ago but they didn't fit together as tightly as I would have liked. I even considered 1x1 legos.. But these little things are perfect!! And so many colors to choose from! Do the beads easily pop out of place, or can you shake them around a bit without them falling out? How did you attach the plates to each other??

Many thanks for the compliments. I really like the work you're doing with seed beads; I've actually been meaning to try out crafting sprites with those beads for some time, now.

The Pixelhobby beads will fully stay in place on their pegboards, unless they're subjected to something ridiculously out of the ordinary. They can take a decent knocking around, as each bead fits tightly on to each peg. I currently have the plates held together by gridding packing tape all across the back. The finished product is usually meant to be framed. I still need to create a lucite (plexiglass) enclosure for mine. Dust will quickly become very problematic with these things if they're not somehow covered or framed.

Thanks again for your comment, let me know it you have any more questions.

Thanks! If you ever decide to try it and you have questions let me know!

Well that's good to know. Now my only issue will be deciding what to make! I'm leaning towards Yoshi's Island..

Thanks again for your help!

how does these beads stay together? they arent ironed, right? do they stay on the grid or what?

my interest in these things have peaked.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NES--still-the-best In reply to 8Bit-Artist [2013-01-20 10:02:40 +0000 UTC]

No ironing is involved.

The pegboards are very similar to perler pegboards (the only difference is PixelHobby pegboards are smaller in size - they have 10 pixels per inch), but imagine that each bead fits tightly onto each pin of the baseplate, and the beads are also tight against each other.

They do stay on the grid, so there's no reusing the baseplates unless you want to scrap what you've created to start something new.

This page on the PixelHobby website has some pictures that may help with visualizing how it works: [link]

do you need to frame it so the beads stay upright or can you kinda glue it to a thicker base like beads and hang it that way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NES--still-the-best In reply to 8Bit-Artist [2013-01-22 16:05:21 +0000 UTC]

I guess you could glue the baseplates to foam core, plywood, or other similar materials, I haven't personally tried that yet. The backs of the basplates are a very glossy type of plastic, so a really strong glue would need to be used, I imagine.

Right now, this beaded screenshot is just sitting underneath my coffee table, with cellophane wrapped over it to keep dust off it. It's held together by packing tape gridded all across the back. When I can get the money, I plan on buying a large enough sheet of lucite (basically it's clear plexiglass) and the thinnest sheet of wood I can find, and making my own enclosure to hang it on the wall & keep dust off it while hanging. You won't want any dust to get on these things, trust me. So in that sense, I'd recommend somehow framing it like I'm trying to do.

i think an ideal way to display would to find a coffee table with a top that is slightly rimmed and sunken in, then you can place it into that portion of the table and have glass over top of it to protect it.

"Gryzor" is the Europe/Oceania title of the game. I'm not sure if this boss really has an official name, but in the Contra episode of GameCenter CX they called it "Alien Gate," which might be official.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. For some reason, the word Gryzor popped into my head when trying to think of if this guy's name.

garsh In reply to NES--still-the-best [2013-01-09 05:42:50 +0000 UTC]

I wish his name was Gryzor. It suits him.

Just FYI, some of the other bosses have very specific names. The computer room thing at the end of the 1st base is called Garmakilma (Garumakiruma in the fan translation), the two faces at the end of the 2nd base are called Godumgar (Godomaga by fans). The armored giant at the end of the Energy Zone stage is called Demon-Helmet Giant Goldia, the UFO at the end of Snow Field is called The High-Speed Antigravity Hover Gultaf. And check out this magnificent name they gave the final alien heart that we just call "Red Falcon": The Heavenly Demon-Soul King Gomeramoth.

NES--still-the-best In reply to CJF28 [2013-01-09 02:30:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. It is 25" x 24". Each PixelHobby bead is tiny, so this thing isn't as big as it would be with fuse beads (it'd be roughly 53" x 46" with Perler beads).
