Description
The mountain in the picture, Połom, is the peak in Wojcieszów, in the Dolnośląskie Voivodeship, Złotoryja County, in the Kaczawskie Mountains, Western Sudetes.
It lies on the left bank of the Kaczawa River, over Wojcieszów Górny, at the end of a short ridge, departing from Baraniec peak.
The whole massif is built of crystalline limestones (marbles) with phyllite insertions, carbonate slates, sericite-chlorite shales, carbonate-quartzite-sericite shales, greenstones and green shales. They are metamorphic rocks from the Upper Cambrian belonging to the Kaczawa Metamorphic Complex. These older metamorphic rocks are cut by the veins of younger rhyolites.
Karst phenomena developed on a large scale in limestones including sinkholes, caves, often with a rich ornaments: stalactites, stalagmites, stalagnates, draperies, cave pearls and more. They have been and still are systematically destroyed by ever-expanding marble quarries which surround the summit from two sides.
Local limestones have been exploited for several hundred years, which have led to significant demolition of the entire massif. Its characteristic “gnawed” silhouette is visible from many places in the Kaczawskie Mountains, Kaczawskie Foothills, Rudawy Janowickie and the Giant Mountains.
