The Russia au is because good old Russian tv censorship couldn't handle a little bit of homo. idk though, I kinda like the idea that some of the gems are dudes because it creates more character diversity.

its cool, the concept of gender itself is, subjective. gems can be whatever they wanna be, because they're basically holograms.
what i enjoyed about the show was that the idea of gender roles isnt relevant, to a certain extent. even characters with male statures (jasper, ruby, etc.) are considered female. even steven, a male half-gem, is maternal and effeminate.
what i can criticise SU for is that if they had hired male voice actors for the characters or had characters that are traditionally "masculine", that would completely destroy the idea of gender roles in gems and would make the cast actually more diverse. ewe i agree that if more gems were 'dude-like' that would add diversity.
