I love context free! I can't stretch it enough how awesome this free peace of software is.
This Image was generated with about 40 lines of code (3kb) and I think it looks like it was painted by an Artist

What do you think ?

Thank you but there is actual no technique in the common sense involved in this piece because it is completely generated from written instructions called context free grammar see [link]

You're right, it does look as if it were painted - in a very uncommon style, too. You actually made me look at the Context Free website - this should be there in the gallery.

Thank you very much.
I am glad you took the time to read my comment and I am very happy that you agree that it looks like a painting.
Great that you took a look at the contextfree website I am really happy each time I make someone aware of this great peace of software.
I did not put this in the cf gallery till now because it is a work in progress - some of my other Design however I committed to the site. I am "contexxt" on contextfreeart.org [link]

Of course I took the time to read your comment. If I'm going to something I'm going to at least throw a glance over them to see if they're interesting.

I might try to install Context Free since I like visual arts but I can't draw (I'm a writer, so it doesn't really matter how my artist's eye is) And I like fooling around with things. The only problem with that is that I happen to use Ubuntu Linux and I haven't managed to figure out the installation yet. Oh, well...

I saw the squares squared and Black Hole Sun yesterday I really like the first and the second... well, does it make sense if I say I don't like it, but I like it? On the one hand I wouldn't put it on my wall because it's creepy and... no. On the other hand I'd definitely use it if I had a strange comic in mind.

Hey Sarshi,
installing contextfree v.2 is very easy in Ubuntu there is a package available in the application manager just search for "contextfree" - to get v.3 running is more complicated because you have to compile it yourself which will nor work unless you modify the the sources
The Windows version of contextfree is nicer because it has an interactive Interface that's why I run it in a Virtual machine under Windows.
And by the way thanks for the watch

TheOtherSarshi In reply to netgenetics [2012-09-22 19:36:25 +0000 UTC]

Ok, I've tried that and I'm not sure what I got. It installed the package and then running it via terminal told me it was "missing input file". Either there's something strange there, or I'm just not good with Linux yet. (unless the Windows version has an interactive Interface and this version has no interface at all...)

Well, I still have Windows somewhere, I'll try it there and if it's fun I'll go into full googling mode to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

But RL is keeping me busy for now - there's a book to finish translating and a conference to prepare, oh my...

But thank you for helping out

The Linux version of contextfree has no gui at all it is a pure commandline tool!
You get usage Information with the following command:
"cfdg --help"
and you can access the manual with
"man cfdg"

I hope this will help you when you caught up with your RL and you have time to do some Art again

Beutiful work! Generative art has a lot of power, only people refuse to try it, because they hate (or are afraid of) its "programming" aspect.
I am amazed at your pic. This far (at generative art) I've only tried Structure Synth, but now I see Context Free has great potential in it as well!

OMG I just wanna stare this pic all day long!!!
Did you code the background too?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

netgenetics In reply to MortuusDiabolus [2012-09-12 19:43:33 +0000 UTC]

And thank you once more

yes something really seems to scare people to use Generative Art tools when I started to work with "context free". If you do a search on DA for "context free" or "structure synth" you get about 400-500 results if you search for Apophysis you get a quarter of a million hits

Maybe it is just that it is not as well known as so I will try to build some awareness for this really incredible Tool

And yes the Background is my code too - the whole image is one Render and is completly untouched ( except of resize )

Apo/FractalFr0st and other flame generators, or Mandelbulber/Mandelbulb 3D programs for 3D fractals have a much more "easier-to-learn" user interface to them. And obviously, they need not a single line of code to generate something nice at a rather low effort.
I guess this is why they got more popular.

For me all of these programs are wonderful and great tools. (Fr0st, Mandelbulber, Structure Synth)
I downloaded Context Free, so I'll see what I can make with it.
Do you know of any tutorials one can read to make the learning faster?

Hi Again you must take a look at the Gallery at contextfreeart.org [link] there is the code for every piece available - that should be plenty to get you started
