This may seem like a long way to go for a Springfield, New Jersey joke, but that's the kind of artist I am. Besides, it's not even the only punchline.
I've been mucking about with these Land Drones in SketchUp for a few months, as part of bringing my FROMM probes to full and proper 3D.
The problem I have with working in 3D is I'm never sure exactly when to stop. At least with a drawing, there's only so much line weight and layers I can work with. Most importantly, the "camera" is fixed. If I want to show another angle, I more or less have to start over. In 3D, since I can rotate the camera anywhere I want after all the important elements are set up, that means less places to hide crimes. Even if I never show the underside of a desk, its shadow can reveal a big block where there should be a proper place to sit. Even now, I wish I'd made a pair of potted plants on either side of the door made to look like Marge's hair, just to further hit home the uncanniness.
I'm currently experimenting with skyboxes, but expect a lot of bunkers and hangars in the future.
