Finished the head armature last night! I still need to make a few minor adjustments to the face, but overall I’m super happy on how its turning out. Im not sure if I’m gonna glue it down, or just pull it tightly and sew it as is. This is the first time i have tested fitted it, so I’m pretty happy that there isn’t much wrong with it.
Head armature was quite the fun challenge to make, involved some clever thinking. If you haven’t been following me on tumblr here’s how i did it: I made a giant foam dummy of half of toothless body and all. Patterned the body then transferred that to fabric, i ended up remaking the head as only carving half a face turned out to be a bad idea. From there i shaped out the rest of the face, re-patterned the face again and sewed that up. Now for the head armature, i didn’t want to chop off the foam head i made for the dummy incase i wanted to make another or use it as a reference so i bought some fosshape (from cosplaysupplies.com) and molded it to the face, unfortunately it wasn’t stiff enough (which i thought would happen) i needed a smooth surface regardless, so what could i stuff it with that would be stiff yet lightweight? Expanding foam! So for about 4-5 hours yesterday i filled the head with expanding foam (took a whole can to fill it) I had to hold the head and make sure it took the shapes i need it to (yup several hours of just holding the head). I did wear a respirator, gloves and protective eyewear so no worries there.
