Description
He sighed, panting lightly as he lay back on the ruffled sheets, shuddering as the cold air rolled into the room from an open crack at the window. He smiled, feeling it slink over the bumps of his body, welcoming goose bumps to the surface of his skin and cooling him.Little beads of sweat began to roll down his chest and gather in pools on his stomach and he could feel her panting chest rising and falling beside him.
Her feet were shuffling under the thin bed sheets as she tried to get comfortable and her grip on them was slowly beginning to loosen.
When the throbbing in his head began to die and his breathing returned to its customary pace he turned to her. By God – she was stunning.
Dawn was breaking outside, and somehow – through some remarkable coincidence – the sun had managed to find the solitary crack in the blinds to burst through and consume her features in a deep, almost holy golden yellow. It was an image that he knew would be hard to shake from his memory, as if some indiscernible force wanted him to look back on this moment in years to come with a fluttering feeling of nostalgia.
He shuffled to her then, taking her in his arms and burying his face into the curve of her neck, smelling her hair subtly. She always smelt like watermelon and cranberries.
-"For always?" he asked, nuzzling his nose behind her ear gently.
-"For always" she mumbled tiredly, giving a small happy sigh as she sunk into him.
He knew she didn't believe that lie.
In fact, he knew he didn't believe that lie. He knew she would wake up the next day and leave him, that that astonishing fluttering feeling he had in his chest, pressured to the point that he felt he would burst would eventually die.
He knew she would forget him, and he also knew that in time, he would forget her too.
Yet still, he clung to her, wishing wistfully that neither of them would come to this realisation until dawn became morning, when her sleepless shuffling became still and his mind could drift off to an unknown place where they really could lay – For Always.
