Description Ever wonder how Starfleet knows where to send the Enterprise?

Have ships that map the constellations.  When a ship reaches a star in a constellation, they take readings from those vantage points searching for water, dilithium, radio signals, and so forth.  With 400 billion stars in our galaxy alone and if the Enterprise had the decanonized warp 10 speed and stayed in a star system for one second, it would take the Enterprise over 12,000 years to complete its mission.  Needless to say star travel will never cease no matter which century you're in.

BUT in order to save time, they have those galactic survey ships that map the cosmos with their course taking them into Earth's constellations.  So if you look at the constellation of Orion, you know where the ship exploring that constellation will be.

And the ship shown is the Auriga class with its experimental time dilation drive.  It's about as fast as any ship, but time slows down on it.  If the ship were traveling at warp 5, speed wise it would still be 214c using the TNG scale, but 125 seconds would pass in the universe for every second on the ship.  And they don't need to worry about power because their warp core only needs to generate warp 5 power inside the time dilation effect while the entire voyage consumes 0.8% of the fuel it normally would.
