Description
to say i'm excited for these two is an understatement!
Meet Pompeii's parents, Cicero and Aoede!
These two were Enkindled, and polar opposites. While Cicero, a Chassi stayed on the sidelines, content to let the world pass him by, Aoede was a fierce and motivated Spire. Upon getting into his role as a Flame, Cicero decided he'd find someone to court. That someone happened to be Aoede, an aspiring, at the time, Cinder Spire. Despite not seemingly caring for much anyone else, Cicero loved Aoede. The two were hardly seen apart. She would talk for hours to him, and the two could be spotted even in the caves, quietly murmuring to one another. She was still very open and talkative to other wolves, often communicating for Cicero. They often finished each others sentences, and he would dote on her day in and day out. However, as time grew on, Aoede started showing signs of a sickness that no Core could explain.
The two of them were destined to be. When Aoede had just passed her Crucible, she fell incredibly ill. She would faint often, she lost weight, and overall she became very weak. This did not deter Cicero, who assisted her daily with her work and with whatever needs she had. His entire world, his entire heart, belong to Aoede. He fretted, and would make sure she was comfortable in their den before leaving for his nightly duties.
Not too long after did she fall ill, Aoede's belly began to swell. Despite the risks of pregnancy in her condition, the two lovebirds were excited to welcome new members to their family. However, Aoede was weak. After a long, strenuous labor, she gave birth to three pups. Two were stillborn, but the last surviving pup was plump and healthy. Aoede did not get a chance to see her puppies before she had passed.
Cicero fell into a deep, heavy depression. He shunned off the comfort of his fellow Chassi, lashing out at those who wished to speak of Aoede, and eventually concerned words turned to irritated whispers as months passed on after her death. He pushed Pompeii towards Alayna, a friend of Aoede's, who had recently given birth, and tried to be distant, but the more Pompeii got into trouble with others, the more irritated the pack got with the puppy's interference. It forced Cicero to step up, to take care of Pompeii. Unsure of what to do or how to parent without Aoede, he set a strict distance and training for his son, to become a Chassi just like him.
He'd look into his son's eyes and see his beloved's gaze boring into his own. With all the inner turmoil, the regret, and the grief of his mate he never fully got over, it melted into a deep, unadulterated loathing of his son.
And as such, he stopped caring completely.
Once Pompeii broke his tail, his world view changed further. Not only was this the child that killed Aoede, he was a fool too.
He didn't speak for Pompeii for an entire year leading up to the Collapse.
Then the Collapse. He heard the rumbling, could smell the fear and the rubble. He had been far from the main entrance, but that did not deter his failure of a son to come find him. Pleading, Pompeii begged to come with Cicero, or for him to turn around and return with him to the pack. Angered, he lashed out.
He had intended for him to hit his ear, but the younger wolf flinched and he had gouged near his eye instead. Unbothered, the older Chassi turned around and left, leaving nothing but his stone and the worst thing he ever created behind.
