Description I was waiting for my client and I saw this. The most famous New York City Taxi Cab there ever was. This cab is now working with the hotel in Brooklyn near Long Island City. Seeing these now reminds of, Taxi Driver 1976 film.

These cabs are huge! Especially the back seat, the leg room space is pretty big and it also has ash trays. This Yellow Cab has a old meter still mounted on the dashboard. The gray one doesn't.

I know it's a Chevy but I never gotten the name of the model.

When I was growing up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, there was a factory making "Checker Cabs" (don't know about this particular model) and were inΒ  Β  fact one of the Town's main employers !!Β  (the other 2 being Gibson guitars and Upjohn pharm.) their output resembled the one picturedΒ  ....Β

The motor is Chevy, the car was built by Checker Motors. The model is Marathon.

Anthony, Question: Which cab is better: the Crown Vic or the Checker? And I think Checker was a company all on it's own, and it produced only taxis (I don't know for sure)

Well, I like them both. Crown Victoria is a good looking car for it's time just like the Checker. I rode the Crown Victoria a few times, they're prettyΒ comfortable although it's not big as the checker. The Checker is a real chuffer car in the old days.

Agreed. I just kinda like the Crown Vic more because there was a custom racing taxi in the 2004 movie "Taxi" with Queen Latifah

That taxi is either a 57-59 biscayne or belair. The biscayne is the lowest package at the time the belair was the mid package and the impala was the luxury package.

Not even close, it's a Checker Marathon. Probably early to mid '70s judging from the bumpers.

Chevrolet has nothing to do with them other than supplying the engine.Β  It's a Checker Marathon built by Checker Motors Corporation, they were their own company.

No such car as a Chevrolet Checker Marathon, it's a Checker Marathon. Checker was it's own company. It only used a GM motor, GM had nothing to do with Checker Motors production.

CometTMortalAlicorn [2017-10-05 19:45:06 +0000 UTC]

Fun fact: The checker cabs were based on a car made by the Checker Motor Company (Founded in 1922 but went bust sometime in the 1990's) called the Checker Marathon. It ran from 1961 All the way to 1982, and used various Chevrolet, Chrysler, and some Ford V8 engines.

Rockett-Customs In reply to CometTMortalAlicorn [2017-10-07 05:43:26 +0000 UTC]

It wasn't 'based' on anything,it was the companys own design. They never used Ford engines.

SiberianSpirit In reply to CometTMortalAlicorn [2017-10-05 20:29:19 +0000 UTC]

Based on a car? Checker made the car. The corporation itself lasted from 1922 to 2010, while the Checker Marathon was made from 1960-1982. They used Continental I6, Chevrolet I6, V6, and V8 engines, and Oldsmobile V8 diesel engines for the final 3 years only.Β  No Ford engines.
