Two ideas that come to mind are; creating a see-through full-bodied character where only the hand (is Thing a Leftie or a Rightie?) is solid..... And this.

That is more or less what I was thinking of (the invisible full body with the visible hand) but it might take away some of the mystique of Thing. Good suggestions btw, even the karate hand

What if, instead of just coming out of a box, he opened up portals that he could reach out of? That way, he could be anywhere but you still only see the hand.
