Michelle swam along, her endless search for sustenance seemingly fruitless. Her stomach ached from lack of food. As if the mermaid life wasn't hard enough to get used to, her diet now consisted of crustaceans and algae, as opposed to her vegan lifestyle when she could walk on land. She swam farther out from her submerged cave than ever before in her tiring hunt for a meal. Fishermen had recently obliterated the lobster and crab populations, and a sea urchin bloom had ended only days earlier leaving the prospect of algae in the shallows dim.
"Oh, if I don't get food soon, I'll go belly up." Michelle thought worriedly. She swam at a slowed pace in order to conserve energy. Suddenly the plucky mermaid saw something a short distance away. She glided through the water, coming up to a small coral reef. Upon closer inspection, the reef was abloom with algae. Michelle was ecstatic at her find. She slurped the algae off of numerous different corals, leaving behind just enough so as to allow the algae to reproduce and grow. As the feasting mermaid moved along the tiny reef, she bumped her head on something. She looked up from her meal and saw a large green drum with an orange sticker on it.
"What the hell is this?" she thought inspecting the barrel drum. She ascended to the top of the container. Michelle unscrewed the cap and a dark blue fluid rushed out into the water. The mermaid got a face full of the mysterious blue stuff. Michelle backed up in the water, in an effort to get away from the pollutant.
"What the hell was in that drum?" Michelle thought rubbing her eyes, "Why did it taste like blueberries?". She ascended in the water as, unbeknownst to her a blue dot had formed on her face. As she passed through the sea brine, she noticed it was becoming progressively harder to tread water. She looked down at her tail, what she saw shocked her. It was turning blue. The invasive new coloration was inching its way down her body and that wasn't all. Her shoulders, chest, the small of her back, even her hands had changed to match a blue hue. She grabbed her ass, feeling it expand between her fingers. "What's happening to me?" she thought frightened by her new pigmentation and sudden swelling.
