I believe it's a Pentacrinites, a crinoid species that attached itself to driftwood.

Traumatocrinus. Pentacrinites was much smaller.

"That floating thing" is a large colony consisting of a 3.3 m long driftwood log with crinoids (Traumatocrinus) attached to both ends.
