Description Character rotation...they were originally each drawn on a seperate page, but to save major spamming on you guys, I put them all in one file (:
So this is my character I designed specifically for my portfolio. Her name is Topaz, and she is a moody, aggressive osprey (:
Why did I choose a bird? I absolutely have no idea and I regret it xD Birds are really complicated, but I decided to be stubborn about this fact and go along using one xD I do love drawing birds though, and developing her was a lot of fun (:

I think I'll upload one massive file of all the sketches from the first day I came up with her, to her final finished look. The change from her look is actually pretty interesting (:

Anyway, so thats this section ^_^ I'm pretty confident with it..I think xD

Artwork(c)Me,

Yup, it's a col erase pencil. Animators use it for the understructure, because when you scan it in, you can change the settings to make those lines disappear, but keep the pencil lines so it looks all clean (:

That's too cool~
I could say my favourite birds are owls.. but to be specific my favourite owl breed would be Australian Barn Owls~ Totally not because they are Aussie

Australian Barn owl?
Interesting to find someone else interested in owls, but you probably know a MILLION times more than I would...in terms of movement...

as an animator, how would you caricature the movements of a european Tyto Alba barn owl with a personality best described as 'Neurotic?'
I'm having a terrible time coming up with character concepts.

I agree! I love to read the series Guardians Of Ga'Hoole by Kathryn Lasky.. that was mainly got me into owls in the first place <3

Hmm, if by neutrotic you mean sort of nervious and thing like that,(since I've never come across that word, I had to search the meaning xDD) I would say they would jerk their head around a lot, have a slow and shaky gait and clatter their beak a bit. Maybe they would have their wings slightly off their body, as in its a freeze frame when they are just about to open their wings.. very close to how a human would tense their shoulders(it's a bit hard to explain but I hope you get the picture). xD Sorry if I'm not much of a help. I'm not very good with animating.... yet :3

I have memorized half the series, own the complete set, and could chat with you for days about the festivals and whatnot, but I've forgotten too much of it.
And can, of course, bitch with you for hours on 'legend of the guardians' being full of shit.

You seriously had to search? XD
Interesting...I oughtta work into the clattering beak.
(His blackmailer is, in the script, forcing him to fly during the day, for spying purposes, mostly because he is, you know, silent in flight. So a few head motions and winces, trying to cut down the glare, get the goddamn sun out of his eyes...might work.
No word on how he avoids crows, but eh.)

xD Yay! Another fan!
I agree, it wasn't to the stoyrline :C That disappointed me.

I don't have as big as a vocabulary as you think
That sounds good to me

The storyline I understand how they had to compress it; but in atmosphere it's a Harry Potter cash-in and, as an animator, I know there was no rationaile behind completely inverting Twilight and Digger's personalities (You could easily animate the characters the way they're written). That part just confuses the audience, because they resemble sidekicks and are thrown into a story that makes them secondary protagonists. 0.0

Sors. Author dad, librarian mom, grew up with no other kids on the block, read a FUCKTON of books. If I'm too loquacious for my own good, eh.
And thanks for the input, hon! ^&^

I totally agree with you! and I hate how they made Digger and Twilight appear at the same moment... it ruined the whole effect :C

xD I would have loved parents like that haha, I have a dad that works in the mining industry and a mum that works at a bording kennel(for cats and dogs~) Haha xD
No problem~

Kinda took away the mystery, having those guys. These days, nothing is allowed to be 'scary' in films aside from giant clouds.

that would explain the oddly mountanous and animalistic brutality of your pictures. ^^ It's a nice effect.

Danke again.
(Accidentally typed in 'Dalek' and now must watch Who episodes 0.0)

It's all corporations...am I the only one who wants the cinematographic medium to be more dominated by the film festivals?

No, I'm saying your art has a good effect.

Any excuse you have.

Birds have so many spaces and masses and forms...get some sculpture sketching down before you attempt. I'm impressed that you got this far. (The tail reminds me of a fan, and I picture her walking with it swaying like Ham Luske's Jenny Wren.)

She seems interesting in motion, but her design wouldn't hurt with a few more tweaks. In particular, the stubby arm bones (watch the way birds fold their wings sometimes, it's mesmerising) and the odd balance of forms. She's so upright, she looks less like an osprey and more...well, I've owned several dildos smoother or bent further than this. (Do not comment. XD)

The head design is nice, you'll get the 3d yet. I'm still learning that, to be perfectly honest.
Her personality, though, is rock on. Everything about her poses communicates her personality, and that's something you never see on model sheets. I commend you.

Thank you (:

LMAO xD Oh man, I'm sorry, I couldn't help but laugh out loud after reading that paragraph xD
Yeah, I could have further developed on her posture for sure, but I honestly was freaking out at this point and just stuck with what I had. I'm pretty happy with her design to be honest (:

Thank you so much, I really appreciate that (: I know I was trying for months to get her personality shown through her poses, overall design and expressions; glad to hear I achieved that (:

It's a nice design.

It's a good analogy to have. XD (I don't know how people would take it if you, as a girl, said that. If you want my advice, you don't have to use that analogy ever again.)
I know that feeling. Her design is actually pretty solid...I would have pushed it slightly and smoothed out her mass a tad. That's just me, though. I'm not much of a calArts lover.

It's a tough thing and takes a lot of practice, so I am quite impressed. You got some nice touches in...
If you want nice touches, go watch 'Rooty Toot Toot' again. Art Babbit draws some of Frankie's expressions to an unimaginably precise degree. Reflective of mental state.
He knows how to sculpt his negative space.
this kind of reminded me of those.
