It was one of those rare days. Living by the sea, one gets used to lots of humidity; sand in your shoes all the time; sudden thunderstorms; facefulls of dust and dirt stirred up by sudden gusts of seabreeze. This day had none of that. The humidity had dropped overnight and the air was cool and clean, the sun shone brightly and the onshore breeze was mild and steady for a change. The few clouds were well offshore and the vault of the sky was a deep, rich blue. I was out early and pleased as I could be, knowing that I had few chores to worry over today and could actually take advantage of such a perfect morning. I filled a mug with coffee and stepped outside; walking as I usually did to the shore, then across the road and onto the headland overlooking the beach. There was a spot there among the rocks that I sometimes occupied when I wasn’t busy with whatever life called me to be doing at any given moment. Those few times when I could just allow the natural beauty of this part of the beach to be everything for me.
I discovered my view-the-world spot occupied. The path I used to get there had a number of twists and turns in it and came to an end on this outcrop rather abruptly. She was settled on the flat stone, looking not out on the ocean, but back at the hillside and therefore directly at me. An ocean of silky copper hair spilled down her neck and around her shoulders, stirred occasionally by the light breeze. She was wearing a filmy, dark blue dress that revealed almost as much as it hid; showing an indecent amount of delightfully large bust, a slim waist and long, sensuous legs. But the most striking aspect of her appearance was her eyes. In the morning light, they appeared almost yellow. Her face would have sent Odysseus on his ocean journey in a heartbeat. To say that she was divinely beautiful would have been the understatement of the year. Sitting next to her foot was a black marbled cat. Her eyes matched her mistresses’ or at least it appeared so. The cat turned its head as I stepped into view; looked me up and down and, in the manner of most cats; dismissed me as unworthy of any further attention. The young lady, however, did seem to think I might be worth speaking to. I stopped cold when I saw them there and then stammered “I’m so very sorry, miss. I had no idea you were here. Please excuse me.” I half-turned to go. “Stay if you would,” she replied. “I have a sense that this is… your place… more than it is mine.” I turned back to her. “Well, I don’t know that I have any particular claim to the spot.
