Their true name is unpronounceable. Our throats don't handle sounds they way they do, so we just call them Books. Had we encountered them first there might have been other names. Monster. Demon. Fiend. Fortune was on our side, however, and they learned of us before we them. They could have remained hidden, but they made their presence known to us in a way crafted in wisdom and compassion. Slowly at first, through transmissions and robot ships. It was a decade before they began sharing physical characteristics with us... height, weight, physiognomy, and then finally pictures.

They knew what they were doing to be sure. We who judge at a glance would have seen creatures from our nightmares and superstitions. We would've declared war out of fear and prejudice and ignorance, but they taught us to look beyond and they gave us a chance to learn who they were before discovering what they were. That made all the difference. It's been a hundred years since we finally met the Books face to face, and since that day they've been our closest friends and mentors. Despite their fearsome appearance they are supremely gentle and anciently wise. Thousands visit their world to learn from their scientists and philosophers, and our race as a whole is better for knowing them. It just goes to show... You can't judge a Book by it's cover.
