For some reason I always depicted Donatello being the one to try to tell NiNi the true story to fairy tales. And poor NiNi would always try not to hear any of it because she prefers the happy form of the stories.I chose the Little Mermaid in this because I really hated the real version of that the most. I first saw the Disney movie which I love to this day, but when I was a child I saw an anime version of the story and it told what REALLY happened. And I felt miserable realizing that was the real story behind it. I did find it interesting when I got the Disney's The Little Mermaid dvd that they DID think about going with the original story - that would've sucked. Ariel dying would make me sad since she's my favorite Disney Princess.
Sorry for the lack of coloring art - I'm kind of uninspired for some reason. I'll come up with something soon.

I saw the anime version not long ago in Japanese.I read the comments and saw that many people pefer the original story instead of the Disney version.

there is actually this one version I saw in a manga that had it's dark elements like mermaids luring sailors to their death with a siren song. but it was a good tale because there was this man who made a bet with the little mermaid that if she could win the prince's heart without her voice within a week she could have legs but if she didn't, she would turn into foam. she washes up on the beach were the prince saves her. but even though she is beautiful he won't look her in the eye. but it turns out that the prince was someone who she saved when they were little and he promised to make the girl he saw his queen.
but it does have a disney-style ending were she thinks he dies from heart failure, but he survives and they live happily ever after. the Manga is called "the grim peddler" but most of the stories have dark elements and I wouldn't recommend it unless you like that sort of thing.
I still think that this is funny, If I were her I wouldn't want to hear it either.

i remember in 7th grade we went to see the little mermaid play.
the actors origanally were going to hve her turn sea foam, but they gave her a happy ending because there were a ton of little kids there.
we all felt really grownup sitting there with a bunch of toddlers who were calling out what the people on the stage should do.
the play was good though.

first,i have been watching the Disney version for years,then one day i watched this video (6 hours of fairy tales ).once i saw the true version of The Little Mermaid,i was disappointed

Yeah it is a tad depressing no?- but the old story sort of has a bad message for kids anyway- he was trying to say that we all have our place in society and to try and change that is dangerous.
Imagine if everyone agreed to that moral- slavery etc would still be legal probably... o_0

basically every fairy tale anyone has heard when they were children is a lie. I've read the real version of Cinderella, Hansel and Gretal, Rupuzel,and more. Very gory and tragic.
I actually found a whole book of these in the library,...i think it was called...The Grim Tales of...something like that. lol sry i'll hafto find it again and tell you. But that book sure it thick (geez!).
I hate it the Areil has her fins cut into two so it looks like she has legs. God almighty, I thought she was gonna die of blood loss or something. poor girl. and then she tries to dance with her broken body.
SIGH! happy endings are far more enjoyable.

Though, I would be Donnie, becouse I've always felt that a story doesn't have to be "the princess gets with the prince" to be a happy story. That, and the fact that I always loved the original stories the best, makes me tell people the real stories alot. XD
Ps. Just so you know, the "Grimm Brothers Fairy Tales" are not the originals either.

On the DVD bonus materials of some you can see storyboards of it. Other than that original versions to stories can be found online. Like Grimm Brothers Fairy Tales.

Well, for one thing the mermaid ends up having her tongue cut out instead of losing her voice like in the Disney version. And she doesn't end up with the Prince because the Prince thought another girl saved him. Because of this, the mermaid is heart broken. However, she is given a dagger by one of her sisters and if the mermaid killed the prince then she would be a mermaid again. However, because the mermaid loved the prince so much, she couldn't do it. So she ends up diving into the sea and dying. In one version she turns into sea foam, and in another version she has her soul ascend into heaven.

I love the Disney's version of the Little Mermaid cuz it's so much happier. I remember reading that version of her dieing and becoming foam, and another where, since the prince married another woman, she tossed herself over a cliff into the sea but angels came and told her she cud become an angel like them 
Was very sweet, but I still like Dinsey better

The best part of the original anime version was when the prince told Ariel, "I really love this girl I saw on the beach that was singing one day. But I can't find her, so I want to marry you."
And like the dope that she was in that story Ariel giggled like a grade school dropout, happy that she had found her prince.

One Japanese anime one I saw the mermaid Marina saved the prince, but when he awoke he saw another girl who came to his aide. The prince didn't realize that Marina was the one who saved him until she like kills herself

i read the real one and cried when she got her tongue cut out to the end.....it is a tragic story...but if youwatch the bonus features on TLM dvd for disney...disney originally wantedto make it worse! She was just going to turn into sea foam with no soul or anything....it was terribly sad...

Ugh - I know - that would've been a major downer. I can't read much of the original stories anymore because they leave a bad taste to me. I know that the stories are supposed to teach children about the real world on how fairy tales is crap, BUT I believe children do need to have fairy tales because it helps stir their imaginations and give them the concept that dreams can come true if they work hard enough for it.

exactly! fairytales and makebelieve give children an imagination and i still have mine ( i will actually be working at disney starting in january) and there is magic in the world i really think it exists whenever a child smiles at seeing a happily ever after, whenever something good happens and yes...when you sing the disney songs because they make you feel good and want to smile

Well, she does die when turning into sea foam. In the anime version of the movie, they had it where the mermaid dives into the sea and her soul ascends into heaven.

The anime version is on youtube I believe. It's actually very nice, although very sad. Like you have to feel sorry for the mermaid because she loves the prince and yet he thinks that another woman saved him instead. I thought that was crap. >< He didn't know that the mermaid was the one that saved her till like AFTER she dove into the sea. Ugh. Dense much?
