Description This piece was done for Robert Brinkerhoff's Illustration I class; a "Metaphorical Self-Portrait". This is a pretty personal piece to me, and there's no way to discuss it without feeling cheesy and exposed, so I won't I'm really pleased with the way this came out, colors and all (although it fought me all the way, and your monitors might not catch it the way it was intended). Inked with microns (just discovered microns...they're AMAZING!) and colored in Photoshop.

Ever since I've seen this image in 2007, I wanted to learn to draw / paint. Then there were a thousand reasons why I could not, but now I am finally starting my journey.

O_O that makes me SO happy to hear. This image was a huge turning point for me, and though it is many years old now, I'm still kind of proud of it. I wish you the best of luck with your art adventure! God bless!

Wonderful work! I am reminded of both "The Hobbit" and "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". Were either of these works influential in creating this piece?

I actually remember seeing this piece years ago when a friend of mine pointed it out to me (she went to RISD with you - just graduated last year). I really liked it, but lost track of it. I am quite pleased to stumble across it once again, and just wanted to let you know that, though it is an older piece for you, it was very memorable one for at least one person.

You know? Of all the older pieces I've done, I really appreciate hearing nice things about this one, since it was really significant for me as well
Thanks muchly! Who was your RISD friend, if you don't mind my asking?

I do not mind at all! It was Tracy Wilder. Goldsmithing/jewelry was her specialty. I don't know if you two kept in touch long after she pointed me toy your stuff, though.

Ahhhh, yeah, Tracey! I know more "of" her than anything...she dated a friend or two of mine

Haha, is that so? I admit that I mostly lost touch with her after high school - something that is annoyingly easy to do, I'm afraid. Perhaps I should try to get in contact with her; I am curious as to how she has changed over the years.

Speaking of which, perhaps you could indulge my curiosity for a moment. I have seen art from a number of people as RISD, and have been consistently impressed. I know that RISD can afford to be selective about the skill of the people it selects (and is), but it makes me wonder about what actually attending is like. I go to VCU, which has a strong art program (though I am not an art student), so I think I have some sense of it, but I would like to hear your take on it. This is just a point of curiosity for me, of course - don't feel pressured to respond.

I've left this comment un-responded to for FOREVER. I just didn't want to forget. You pushed the "Tell me about your Alma Mater" button

I really don't know where to begin.
RISD is a pretty incredible school. It definitely constituted some of the most formative years of my life, artistically. I think one of the big things about that was being surrounded by so many people who were so much more talented than I am; it was really motivating! You don't want to embarrass yourself when you put something on the wall, you know?
As a whole, though, the school is a really mixed bag of misfits and there is a really distinct identity for each department. Illustration is pretty geeky and a lot of fun. I think, coming from a background (as a lot of RISD kids do) where they were the one artsy kid who didn't fit in in high-school, it was pretty awesome to find a whole collection of SUPER awkward people you could really just be yourself around.

It gives me goosebumps! (In a good way, of course.) I wish I could describe how this resonates with me. I'm glad I found your gallery and I wish I had something intelligent to say, but I'm currently sick and my brain is a fog. lol

This is so amazing... I love the colors- the vibrant oranges and yellows with the blue shadows makes for a lovely combination. The subject matter just looks so joyous, too. The area beneath the trees is really intriguing, I want to follow it. I didn't notice the armchair at first, it's tucked in there so nicely.
Again, really great work!

If you like microns, you should get into nib pens... They're a whole new experience. You'd enjoy them.

Is interested to hear what the piece is about if you have the time later,
