UPDATE: Did a series of minor tweaks to improve on the original design. Β Enjoy everyone!
UPDATE UPDATE: More adjustments to prepare for portfolio.
Ten thousand years after the Horus Heresy ended the Emperor's Great Crusade and damned humanity, the Traitor Legions of the Chaos Space Marines still venerate the Arch-Traitor Horus for "freeing" them from the yoke of the Emperor and delivering them into the bosom of the Gods of Chaos. Behold the face of the freedom.
The Death Guard of Barbarus, children of the Primarch Mortarion, are the servants of Nurgle, God of Disease. The grim and fatalistic XIV Legion gained a reputation during the Great Crusade for their indefatigable infantry forces and their relentless determination to overcome any opponent through sheer unbreakable willpower. During the rebellion Mortarion sided with Horus and led the Death Guard against the Imperium, however on their voyage to the Siege of Terra disaster struck their fleet after they foolishly culled their Navigators, discovering them to be Imperial loyalists looking to sabotage their former-masters. The Death Guard fleet became lost in the Warp and Nurgle, God of Pestilence, descended upon the hapless soldiers with the daemon-spawned Destroyer Plague. Virulent disease and unfathomable agony gripped the Death Guard and their Primarch, infecting them with every malady imaginable until finally Mortarion, who prided himself on his ability to withstand any opposition, succumbed and offered his soul to Nurgle in exchange for release. What emerged from the Warp bore little resemblance to the XIV Legion that had first turned from the Emperor's light: the horrifying Plague Marines. For ten-thousand years since the Heresy the Death Guard have ravaged the Imperium, spreading disease and misery, spitefully driven by the secret knowledge that they failed the ultimate test and are now eternally enslaved to the darkness.
So yeah, this started off as a quick sketch that became something much more. I am experimenting with this new style of painting where I am constantly collapsing my layers to create a single canvas. Anyone reading this, let me make this known: this technique WORKS. For years since art school I have been struggling with the barrier between fine art and digital art, and now I've found a way to cross it. Don't be afraid, just experiment.
This is to be the first in a series of four. Not sure why I started with the Death Guard, they're not really even my favorite Chaos Space Marine legion, but I do think they present a lot of interesting visual opportunities. I think I like them because they're so spiteful. Next is the Emperor's Children!

That heretic's stealing the credit for the "just as planned" look.
But he's a dirty heretic at that, so that makes him a good one in fact.

Love how the wounds have such a subtle highlight in them to make them stand out, yet its not too bold to be the main focal point. The rustic look from all the metal surrounding the Death Guard. It has such a soft facial expression which makes it look so lovely despite being a deadly picture.

Thanks! Β I really wanted the expression to look sort of sad, almost regretful, as this thing that was once a human being is being swallowed by its own corruption. Β I'm a huge Chaos Space Marine fan, but I've always enjoyed the "slaves to the darkness" tragedy angle.

You're welcome! Oh well that all clearly shows in your artwork! Its pretty cool when an artist has a style or theme they use in lots of their art work. Looking forward to your future posts. ^_^Β

This is insane! Β You have very very aptly displayed the decay and disease while when you look into the eye - I don't see a walking corpse or pure rotting death but a cold calculating intelligence. Β Simply amazing!

Thanks! Β I think there are two ways that Chaos typically gets portrayed: either as lost souls utterly deranged by the powers they embraced, or cunning monsters who use the powers of the Warp, sometimes willingly, sometimes unwillingly, to further their dark goals. Β I always see the Death Guard as that second one: Nurgle essentially tortured them into becoming his slaves for all eternity, and the knowledge of that weakness drives them.

I actually have an Emperor's Children one I have had in the work forever (I lost all of my progress when I was right near the end and I haven't had the heart to redo it). Β I'll probably do the Thousand Sons one first, when I get around to it.

I was kind of torn on how to do them though, since my original sketch was a horrifically mutated sorcerer type, the actual sorcerers of the Thousand Sons don't seem ostensibly mutated at all (and thus are less interesting than my original idea)...

Nah, doesn't seem like it. Β Chaos sorcerers are mutated as shit, but the Thousand Sons seem to have that under control I guess? Β I don't know, check out the models, reference images, and whatnot online, but I can't find anything that looks like my sketch.
Of course, still might just do it anyway because it's badass.

You could do a Thousand Sons Sorcerer post flesh-change though, if you're still married to the idea of a mutated sorcerer, that is...
