Description
Been dragging myself out of bed at 5.30 in the morning for the last few Tuesdays, so that I can join in one of the regular Sketchholic sessions online. I need to loosen and speed up and this seems like a good exercise for that. Now if only I could get my pc system to join in the speeding up process I might have managed to submit my doodle this morning. Missed by a matter of seconds after my initial attempt was rejected as too big a file.Anyway this is that 50minute sketch turned into a two hour sketch. Theme was `Ancient Spiritual Leader` or something similar. At that time in the a.m. not a lot sticks. Anyway this was the way mine was going. Used ArtRage pencil and watercolour brush.
May take this to some sort of finish in the future - or at least use the character.

Hi Creative,
It doesn't work in quite the same way as traditional - but then what in digital does - it's nothing like as fiddly as the complicated controls and truly awful lag in Painter (unless you're doing a postage stamp. Don't get me wrong - Painter is a fantastic software - which makes the performance of the watercolour all the more disappointing.
I like the ArtRage watercolour and find it the closest I've encountered so far to my 18 years using the real stuff. It's something definitely worth trying if you like watercolour. Try combining it's settings with some of the papers and their controls and you can get some amazingly watercoloury effects.
Have fun - hope you like it.
Cheers,
Nick

Thanks for a great and thorough reply! I'm still psyched about your art, so I'm gonna have another go in your gallery. My great inspiring sources are Alan Lee, Arthur Rackham, and three swedish artist called John Bauer, Alvaro Tapia and Sven Nordqvist. All of which are great watercolorists. And I might be going back to the original medium soon too. I miss it, altough it's hard.
Cheers,
Emil

Well Emil, you are talking about all the stuff I love, so I have to believe we are kindred spirits. Do you Know the work of J B Monge, and P J Lynch as well? Brilliant stuff in the same mold.
Thanks for the encouragement.
Cheers,
Nick

Artrage again... You use the same brush throughout this piece?
How'd you get that bloke to keep his beard up the whole time?

Hi Aaron.
Yep - ArtRage. It's mostly the watercolour brush, with different settings, but I also used the chalk tool here and there, and then blended it with the 'wet palette knife' to unify the look. I find those three tools work well together.
I have one word for you - Starch,

Awesome. You know you've hit on a good thing when sketch turns into something as fully fledged as this.
