For Training Quest 2 over at . I managed to brain enough to write a little just in time but it was speed written so hope it makes some sense XD

Lurdes rested a reassuring hand on Rosalina, aka Ruby’s, back. The could feel the muscles bunched in tension under her younger friend’s uniform as they walked into the training area. She rubbed it a little and smiled gently at her. She had been able to coax Ruby out of her room to join her but she knew it wasn’t easy on the girl. Both Lu and Ruby had taken a fair amount of damage when faced off against the enemy last, but while Lu’s civilian life in extreme sports had basically made her an adrenaline junkie who accepted injury as part of the territory, Ruby hadn’t recovered as well, mentally. She already had confidence issues and the run-in had made her insecurities in her abilities that much worse. Lu didn’t blame her for it in the slightest, but she also wasn’t going to stand idly by when she thought she could help. When Amethyst Dragon, as leader of the Amethyst Dragoons, had asked her members of her team to spar together, Lu felt this was a good opportunity to introduce an idea she had been thinking of.
Ruby looked around the arena and noticed Ame was there, ready to observe. Lu felt the girl stiffen under her palm in anticipation of fight or flight. Lu made her grip a little more firm and after a warm nod to her leader and lover, she used her arm to subtly turn her teammates attention to her and looked up at the girl she had claimed as a little sister but two stood a full half a foot taller than her. She was adorable and her instinct was to protect her, but at the same time she knew that Ruby had a core of strength made up of stubborness and creativity that just had to be teased out past those roadblocks. She had seen she was brave too, when she agreed to paraglide, fell from the sky, and still was ready for more adventure when Lu caught her. Lurdes had to do her part to help her get it out and she had an idea of how to do it, just a little differently.
“No need to worry love, she’s just here to watch. She won’t be fighting us, she’s not giving us a grade, and if one of us gets hurt, she’ll make sure the Moonstone medic will get to us quickly. Not that that’s going to be an issue because we’re double teaming it, remember?”
Ruby’s eyes briefly darted back before refocusing and tentatively nodding. Her bangs bounced in front of her face, red in her Ruby Salamander form. “Yeah… okay.” She chewed her lip a bit in thought and Lu waited. It was best to wait for Ruby to get a thought out before cutting her off as the girl had particular ways of doing things. “If you think this will be helpful…” Ruby didn’t want to be doubtful of Lurdes, she looked up to the girl, but she just didn’t feel she had the power or control to be in Amethyst Dragoons. Or here at all really. Should she even be here? She didn’t exactly love an audience to her failures, either. She shoulders managed slump even in their tense state.
Lurdes cocked her head to the side with a grin, her purple lipstick standing out against her smile. “Honestly? I think we’re a couple of women you don’t wanna make angry to start with, I’m downright excited to see what we can do together. I wanna see your flames up close but uh… not up close enough that my wings get cripsy. They need a bit of a rest after the last three fights I got in weren’t particularly kind to them. I may ask if there’s a ‘five heals and you get a free sub sandwich’ card if it keeps happening.” Lu spread one of her white and violet wings out and waggled it comically. Either that helped ease Ruby’s mood a little or the girl was kind because she let a little puff of a giggle out before Lu walked towards some training dummies on the side of the large arena.
“Okay, like I said, afterwards we can do a little hand-to-hand if you like, or some stability training or whatever, but I want see if this will work. I’m going to stand back here away from you and observe, but I I’d like to see you try burning specific targets I direct you to if you can.”
Ruby steeled herself to be watched as she worked, but after some time and encouraging cheers from Lu, she set about the task. Some of the targets were fairly close, some set about as far away as she figured she had been able to reach before, and others seemed outside of range. She breathed in and summoned Conflagration Inferno!, and the fire started at her feet and rolled outwards, towards the first two dummies. Out of the corner of her vision she saw Lu flying to her left overhead as she observed how the fire moved.
Sugilite Chiroptera watched how the fire moved out from Ruby, in a single line, first taking out the nearest target, and then after returning to its caster in a safe burnout, she nodded to Ruby to do the same with the second target. It was the same result, though Ruby made this one a little more impressive, reaching higher and Lu could feel more of the heat in the air. It wasn’t overly uncomfortable for her, but the thermal made her lift up slightly, and Lu laughed happily in surprise. She should have known it would, but it was something to remember. Ruby glanced up nervously at the outburst. Has she done something wrong?
“The heat from the fire just caused an updraft is all, just surprised me and bounced me a bit. You’re doing beautifully!” She landed back behind her partner and tossed a glance to the target still standing in front about 20 feet ahead. “Can you reach that one with your fire, without your miasma?”
Ruby frowned and shook her head. “No, that last one was as far as I could get it.” Her brow furrowed in frustration.
“Aim for it anyway and… point away from it at this angle.” Ruby felt Lu turn her slightly so she wasn’t facing the target head on. “Oh, and really plant your feet just in case. If you feel like you’re going to fall over shout at me right away, okay?”
“O..kay…” Ruby’s frown became more pronounced as she puzzled this. She didn’t like things that didn’t make sense but at the same time Lu had said she wanted to try an experiment and she trusted her.
Lu moved even further to the side away from the target and back a bit as Ruby put as much power and speed into her flames as she sent out her Conflagration Inferno! again. As it roared out, Ruby felt a cool rush from behind and to the left and her hair and uniform were pushed forward from her body. It was just the edge of Sugilite’s Chiroptera Wind Beat, but Ruby reminded herself to keep still and stand steady as it was still strong. She watched in surprise as the main portion of her fire column seemed to blossom forth when fed the extra oxygen, the magical fire strong enough to withstand and even be enhanced by the strong wind coming at it.
Lurdes grinned a mad grin of satisfaction as her plan worked. Carefully as to not push Ruby herself with the blasts, she strafed slowly to the side, using her wind blasts to shove the fire out to the target and she outright cackle when they had managed to curve the column in a matter of seconds to consume it entirely.
“They can run and they can hide, but we can still chase them!” Lu lifted off to do a victory roll in the air while the fire returned to Ruby before scooping the girl up too. “And you have FIREPOWER girl! Has anyone said you look like a total goddess when you’re using your powers?” Poor Ruby had to withstand the outburst that Lurdes didn’t always show everyone, since she was generally pretty reserved, and as uncomfortable as Ruby was with so much praise usually, she knew that Lu was always honest about it and damn it, that was pretty cool.
“It was your idea though,” Ruby deflected as she was set back down on the ground. She did smile though at her friend. It was nice to feel she had won something, that her power had more potential. And it was good to feel she wasn’t alone in it, that she had a team behind her.
Lurdes glanced over her shoulder at Ame, who seemed pleased at the successful exorcise. Her heart was full of pride in her friend and in their team. Her overwhelming need to protect Amethyst Dragon, Ruby, and the entirety of the Dragoons was always there and her drive to help find ways to do it felt satisfied to a degree. She wanted all of her sister Animamates safe, and she would continue to find ways to help make it happen, as well as chafing to grow in power herself. She had ideas of how to make herself useful to others already buzzing in her head, but for now, she gave Ruby another hug before asking if she wanted to do some hand to hand or go find Frankie and play a game of “Will FB Eat it?” with their friend’s Pilik.
