beatiful color of the wood on the scroll, I wish I had a dark color viola TT-TT. I love playing it though!

Wow that is a great pic, I am also a Viola player
It's a great pic and I like the way it's from a different angle and it really shows off the viola
Not to mention your awesome photoshopping of it

The viola is so underrated. They beat a violin any day.
Wonderful shot. I like the viola's pegs.

Omg! I play the viola, this pic is beautiful!! She's playing high second, so...E? Is she playing a E? Can't tell if it's low second or high though...I'm guessing she's good a vibrato? (lol)

Nice work, very effective use of selective desaturation. I like the angle and composition too. The focal depth also works well, although I'm not sure how much control you have over the aperture settings with a Powershot
What was the lighting set up, did you use a flash?

yeah I was forced to use the crappy canon G5 built in flash
Im still learning about stuff like aperature, etc, but I wish the dof was a bit deeper now in retrospect.
Thanks a lot for the insightful comment!

cool, i love this contrasting technique when the b&w is darkened or something similar. Always gives a great effect. Good capture

great use of selective coloring. it really makes the viola the focal point, and then you notice the person playing in the background. i like the bright hands too, it adds a lot of depth and movement to the image.

Very nice job!
Where in PS is the option to do such a thing? I would normally cut it out... make a new layer... and then make the separate layer b/w. Seems like there is an easier way.

I use layer masks to cut out the image and have separate layers for the color and the black and white. I dont think its necessarily easier but it gives smoother edge results because you are free to rework the edges over and over without affecting the actual image.
