Description
Happy Monday, dear watchers and watcherettes!I've been certainly making good on my attempt to keep the Gallery freshly updated each week with new material and I wanted to kickstart this one in the same vein, by showing something that isn't work-related.
In-between my long list of commissions, webcomics and other projects I have to illustrate, I always try and take a few moments each day to do something for myself. To try new things or just to stretch the boundaries of my style or simply to do something I've never done before. It's an excersise in patience (I usually just work a few minutes ecah day so these take longer than other work-related pieces), but also something to keep me sane amongst all the deadlines.
Elric of MelnibonΓ© has always been one of my favourite Fantasy characters. I recently stumbled upon an old copy I had of the albino's exploits as written by the great Michael Moorcock and found myself having an incredible urge to illustrate the grief-stricken, eternally tragic figure of the Dragon Isle'sΒ 428th Emperor.
I can't deny that a little infleunce came over me from BROM's (now) classic depictions of Elric, but I tried to add my own twist nonetheless. Especially regarding his imperial armor, as used by all the rulers that came before him. Moorcokc describes Elric's physique as being scrawny and sickly, so I wanted to reflect that by making the armour bigger than him; unfitting and heavy-looking. I also tried to convey the albino's tiredness and grim outlook on life in his face and its expression. You'll also notice I left out his famous sword Stormbringer, but because I'd love to tackle the character again when he's out of his dominion and travelling the Young Kingdoms in search of his loved one.
As I mentioned earlier, I also tried a few new tricks and combinations of colors on the skies, which I'm happy with.
So, as usual let me know what you think and hope you enjoy this one!
More updates on commissions and projects coming soon, so stay tuned
Have a great week!
Nic.-

I think your armor is one of the best and definitely not belonging to the young kingdoms.

Thank you, Sean!Β
I purposefully left out the sword Stormbringer and his full armor, because it is my intent to give the character another try. So you may be in luck in the not-so-distant future

Β Very splendid work Master Nicolas - I have no fondness for the White Wolf myself, but I know enough of the character to realise how well you have portrayed him.Β

I love this! I might just have to read this book! On an unrelated note, I heard he's the guy Edward Elric from "Fullmetal Alchemist" is named after.

Edward Elric is NOT named after Elric of Melnibone, it says so in FMA Volume 15.

Thank you so much, mate!
If you haven't read the book, I urge you to do it; you won't be dissapointed. And yes, as far as I've heard Edward's name is derived indeed from Moorcock's albino warrior.

Hey, I was at Books-A-Million and I found "Elric, stealer of souls." I'm assuming that's different. Would you know anything about that book? Would I have to read "Elric of Melnibone" first? (It was still by Michael Moorcock.)

Hey there, mate! I'm sorry for the late reply; I've been quite busy.Β
I don't remember the exact order in which to read the Elric saga, but I'd defintely start with 'Elric of MelnibonΓ©'. I'm sure that's the first one in the series, by Moorcock indeed.

It is a nice subject.
I have one of his books and the story is so tragic that you get a sense of nihilism in it. for another cool drawing...

NicolasRGiacondino In reply to walternonames [2015-02-24 21:45:39 +0000 UTC]
Thank you, Walter!
The first time I read the books, I did think it was a bit too much for one guy to endure such loss over and over again; but later on found that that's his greatest strength after all. To be able to withstand losing everything and still keep on going. Many modern heroes owe some of their unending pathos to Elric's exploits.

A big thanks from a Moorcock fan, Nicolas! It's always nice to find an admirer of the Eternal Champion saga, although we are few in numbers. Cheers! and keep rocking your unique style.

It's a pleasure to hear compliments from Moorcock's fans; and yes, it always amazed me how few in number the fans of the saga were, but I guess we make up for it in passion
