Description My dear citizens of the Imperium of Mankind...

It isn't often that I get the chance to draw something from the Dark Millenim that isn't Space Marines or the forces of The Emperor of Mankind. So, I relish these assignments when I do get an opportunity to depict other aspects of the vast galaxy of the 41st Millenium.

Lately, I've been getting more Eldar requests that usual from my clients. It's a race I love to depict, mostly because I try and instill them with a very alien look, the opposite of the official depictions, which make them look too human to my tastes.
Thin, elongated fingers and cold countenances are the trademark of the Eldar for me and I hope I've got that accross with this Autarch rendition.

The design was a special request by the client, of his own imagining, so I tried to stay as close as possible to the original and still add my own touch (especially with the aforementioned anatomy distortion).
The enemy this brave warrior is facing isn't something to take lightly either: Necrons have also been a favourite army of mine and I love to depict those ancient skeleton-machines...

I'm especially proud of colours with this one, as I am with all my illustrations lately. I'm focusing light much better and getting the best our of contrasting hues.

I hope I've done these two great races justice and stay tuned for some more Warhammer 40,000 variety!

Nic.-

I can not agree with you more about the eldar looking alien, beautiful. It is also refreshing to see it is wearing it's helmet, in franchises like dawn of war they lose quite a bit of their appeal when they simply appear to be ladies in tight armor. Hoping to see more!

I've been a fan of your work for a long time (as a member of B&C I am subscribed to your Primarch thread) and I always love seeing your non Astartes pieces and this is no exception.

Saim Hann is my favorite Craftworld and I love the direction you took this one, the Egyptian style chin, the claws around his wrist and top knot. They really convey the savage image of Saim Hann.

However from a fluff standpoint.....the Necrons would have phased out once destroyed. Anyway still great.

Because thats the highest form of treason and heresy!

Superb drawing as usual, its a rare instance I achknowlegde the Eldar might possibly be cool or capable of a fight with something stronger then a frail leaf and this is one of those occasions Well done!

I love Autarches so nothing to say on that part. It's lovely!

But what caught my attention was your necron design. It's very round, and kinda creepy in a retro way! Kind of a mix of the first generation "chaos cyborgs" and the newer necrons.

Definitely prefer your way of doing Eldar they look more Alien if that makes sense, both sleak and graceful on a level humans can't compete against.

I think I said that before, but I just love your style, with the sharp shading lines and your outlines.
I could never do that, I tend to get all watercolour-ish.
And the way you do smoke and night-skies...

I think you did a great job with the Eldar.
I have to admit I only got interested in Warhammer 40k, 'cause I loved your illustrations

Now this is a great artwork from you that's made the front page yet again! Nice to see something Eldar on the front

Also, is it just me or does the chin piece on the Autarch look.. off?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NicolasRGiacondino In reply to robertharutos [2010-11-18 17:15:51 +0000 UTC]

Front page stuff? Wow, that's quite an achievement for a 'mini' piece I'm glad I keep the Dark Millenium present on dA.

As for the chin piece, it might look off because his head is slightly titled to one side, and not completely facing the viewer; I understand that it may not show, but that was the intention and thus the orientation of the chin.

Even if the head is suppose to be tilted, the chin piece doesn't look natural =\

But I still love it!

I completely and 100% agree. The large majority of artist (even 'official' GW art) simply depicts them as tall, slender humans with pointy ears. The only person I ever saw make them look and feel alien was Tiernen Trevalion (and you, LOL) in the last part of the Daemonifuge graphic novel.

But this exactly what I like to see them look like, simply awesome Nic

Como no? Your style lends itself without effort to the Eldar. The slight plainness with a great degree a detail added about in a subtle way. Great work amigo.

Also, best wishes on your familey life as well.

I have asked for some of your work as a Christmas present this year. I Cant wait to see how your progress in all your other works too.

Don't worry about not doing them justice, Nic. In my humble opinion, you have.

I have to ask, and maybe you've answered it already, but what types of markers do you use and on what type of paper? Just curious, as my markers tend to bleed no matter what type of paper I use (I'm currently using a form of water colour paper) and I envy your clean shading lines. And your metal. Even if our styles are very different.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

NicolasRGiacondino In reply to Belazikkal [2010-11-17 23:21:14 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the compliments as usual, Maria!

The markers I use are a brand called KURECOLOR and they're cheaper and work just the same as the expensive ones. As for paper, I try not to use something special (like the watercolour paper you mentioned) but I can't recommend anything, really. Markers aren't supposed to bleed a lot; though they do bleed, that's inevitable. That's why you have to work fast as hell.

One other thing that i find stops the bledding somewhat is to blackline the drawngs (ink them), which makes the marker stay within the lines.
