(The beginning of the backstory is the story from the reflections comic just in case you haven't read it.)

Backstory (I haven't read the comic in a while so it might be slightly off from the original comic by Hasbro)

The young princess of the sun Princess Celestia, went with her dear friend and teacher Star Swirl to discover new worlds and go beyond the limits of magic to learn new things and go where no pony has gone before. During her trip with Star Swirl, she came upon an Equestria of ruin, everything that happened in their world was the complete opposite from theirs. They had been discovered by guards who took them to a dungeon deep under Canterlot. Afterwards the king was to come and see the prisoners, and they were both surprised to see the one and only King Sombra. His looks were different, and his magic was full of light instead of the dark umbra pony magic that Sombra possessed in their world.

Despite the surprise, King Sombra released Celestia and Sombra from the dungeon after deciding that they were innocent and could be trusted. The princess Celestia found herself charmed by this gentlecolt, his handsome features and his wise mind, as well as kind soul, found herself falling for this alternate version of Sombra. Star Swirl had decided to stay longer, much to the pleasure of Sombra and Celestia who slowly began to know each other, taking walks among the beautiful forests of that Equestria.

It was clear that the King Sombra was returning these attractions to the princess, for after one magical night at a dance among the stars, they both felt it in their hearts. The most beautiful thing to ever experience in life...love. But their love was not meant to be....

Star Swirl decided to stop entering the portal between worlds after discovering a disturbance between their two realms. Even though Celestia was hesitant about not seeing Sombra anymore, her love for Sombra was something she could never pass off like it was nothing, and found herself going behind Star Swirls back to see Sombra. One night, Celestia went through the portal to see Sombra once again, and during that night, Sombra took her to a special forest where they promised to always come back for each other. But after that night, Celestia returned to her world to learn Star Swirl discovered her secret and began accusing her of endangering the rift between the worlds. For the best of the land of Equestria, and all the other worlds, Star Swirl permanently closed the portal.

Celestia couldn't let this be the last time she saw him, especially when she didn't even get to say goodbye. So day by day, Celestia looked for a way to get through the portal to see him again, and finally found a spell that would reopen the portal. While Star Swirl went on a trip to help a city, Celestia took the portal to visit him again, but it turned out that while she was gone...things had changed.

(After Comic/ Solar Aurora's back story) EDIT: Short version

After Celestia's tragic loss of her dearest Sombra, she tried to be strong and continue working on her duties for her citizens and her kingdom. As she did for when she lost her sister to the nightmare, it was hard but at least she was able to make it through. After a while, Celestia felt strange symptoms of nausea, light headed, and fatigue. After having a fainting spell int front of an entire court, everyone went in panic and they took Celestia to a Hospital where she soon learned that she was with child. Luna was freaked out by this news, and Celestia was as well. But Celestia felt great happiness to have this child, for she knew that it was the child of her dearly lost love.

When the foal was born, Celestia named her Solar Aurora. The young filly reminded Celestia so much of her beloved Sombra, having his coat tone, his mane style, and most of all beautiful emerald eyes. Solar became very precious to Celestia, for she was the only thing left she had of him, something that was part of both her and Sombra. Celestia barely had the time to take care of her new child, due to all her duties, but with the helping hoof of Luna and Twilight, most of it was successful. Celestia had to attend duties that she had to take care of herself, but during that time Luna baby sat, but could only do it for short periods since she had to get her sleep for night shift.

During the years Solar grew up, she became just like her father, except for a few personal traits that came from her mother. Even though Solar was born an Alicorn, her magic wasn't as great as her mother's, and had a bit of trouble with magic, but still had great talent and loved to study new things. Solar was not one for quitting and always kept trying no matter how hard it was. Even though her life growing up was great, having her caring mother, her aunt Luna and Uncle Scorpan, as well as their daughter and their expected twins, life had been slightly rough. Solar felt somewhat lonely, and that was the fact that she knew nothing of who her father was, and her mother never told her, always changing the subject when she tried to bring it up as a filly.

The ending of this backstory, what everyone didn't know, was that ever since Celestia became pregnant with Solar, a crack between the worlds began to form. During Solar's foal hood, the crack began to grow, and on her seventeenth birth day, the signs began to show. Holes began to show up between them, and the world's were once again becoming one, which was all caused by Solar Aurora's birth. From the beginning, Sombra and Celestia were never supposed to be together, especially have a child, for their worlds didn't belong together. So now that Sombra and Celestia had Solar, it disrupted the worlds and now both are in danger, and everything would turn into chaos.

After finding this out, they believed that the only way to fix it was to send Solar to the world where she was created. But Celestia was very hesitant to let go of her dear child. After learning this, Celestia decided that it was time to tell her daughter the truth about her father and what happened so many years ago. Solar was intrigued and upset when her mother told her the truth of everything and why the worlds were combining again. Celestia tried to convince Solar that they would find another way, and she could never let her go. But with determination to keep everyone safe, Solar decided to go to the other world in order to fix the mess her birth had created.

Celestia was heart broken and couldn't help the tears as she tried to stop her, but her brave daughter told her mother she would be all right, and that she would see her again...always. Now that things had been decided, Celestia and Luna put their magic together to help open the portal between the world for Solar to slip through. With a finale goodbye, Solar takes the portal and fixes the worlds, mending the wound.

Celestia falls into depression after once again losing someone she loves dearly. Solar had gone to that world to learn, to save her mother and everyone else, but most of all, find her father and save him from the darkness that consumed his body and soul.

As to this day, Celestia waits everyday for her daughter to return, dreading that she never will. Someday her wish will come true, and she will hear the sweet sound of her daughter say..."Mother?..."
