Hug and embrace are synonymous in this situation. In different regions they have slightly different conotations (it looks like an embrace is generally considered more romantic, though where I live it's the deep friendship form), and it Β is possible to embrace an idea, but not Β to hug it. A hug, at least where I live, is used for childish/familial circumstances: hug a teddy bear, hug a parent/child, unless deep emotions, such as pride or relief, are present, in which case they would hug tightly, or embrace. Embraces are associated, to everyone, with deep emotion and therefore a tighter grip.
That could be condensed and made more coherent, but my keyboard isn't working properly and I'm tired, so that's the best I can do.
