Description One of our Photo assignments this semester was Master's copy. We had to choose a famous photographer and make a copy of one of his works, or a version of it. I chose this Sam Haskins photograph - [link]
Well... it's far from being a perfect copy . I had limited resources and apparently can't figure out the lighting yet. But I thought it was a very good exercise and definitely it is very useful to learn from and copy even the masters while you are learning.

Lol, the funny thing is I like yours better, it's more real, with some actual emotion. But like you said, a little bit of diffuse lighting to even out the luminosity of the belly would much improve the image and give it some eveness. (And though this seems crass I'd probably ditch the arm hair on the model...)

yeah, i've heard the comment about the arm hair before... well... i kinda agree, but on the other hand we've become such an artificial beauty seeking public... let it be like this
thank you for the fav

Well, I know, that's why I said I feel sheepish even saying it. But I think it mainly has to do with an incongruence between what we're used to seeing in a model and what you're presenting. And the only problem with arm hair is that it's slightly masculinizing, which detracts from the unity of her feminine presentation.

Either way a little 'healing brush' work in PS and I could take that right offa there, lol

Not that far! Consist your interpretation on reversing from right-handed to left-handed and choosing an architect table base?

i decided to have another look at this photo, and i looked at the original, and i agree with *inkydee , yours is better, the model is better looking, and yours is easier to look at, warm and tender as ~hIdd3N said, the original is bitchy. in risk of repeating myself, great work teddy

NIKITAgirl In reply to Goggz [2005-12-27 15:51:20 +0000 UTC]

thank you, mike.
the thing is that i kinda like the bitchiness. sam haskins' version is more sultry and more sexually charged (which i like) while mine is softer, and has more of a "early, quiet morning feel", which is not bad but not what i was going for.

hldd3n [2005-12-05 08:27:14 +0000 UTC]

its tender, lovely and warm ... and the Sam Haskins original is kind of b*tchy
well i definitely like this one good work !
but i think it would be better if there was no shadow on the girls tummy..

I know about that shadow! It bothers me too! I have other versions where I had lit the tummy but I don't like her expression that much on them.

I really like this. The white with the blue is wonderful. I really like the break in the photo across her stomach. Wonderful model.

Yeah, now that I have the print I can really go back and remember how i lit it and analyze it. This assignment was very helpful.
Thanks, Holly!

I think he's got two equal powered lights, one on either side of the model and slightly in front and a softbox to fill in shadows on the floor in front. I'm probably wrong of course but that's what I think he did.

I like both shots, his is more distant, making the model more of an object. Yours is warmer and makes you care for her more. Has the feeling of Sunday morning with your lover.

Ahhh. how i wish i could be an assisstant to a photographer and be able to observe the way everything is lit. They don't teach us anything at school.... nothing!

There's books and mags. Thats' where I get most of my stuff. Plus, if you take things apart in your head it helps alot.
