Description Chapter One of my writing guide.

PDF format - download it to read it.

Part 1 (the intro) is here: [link]

Phew, if writing plainly is hard, describing how and why to write plainly is harder still. I've written, rewritten, revised, reordered and proofread.

I expect there'll still be mistakes in here somewhere. If you spot any, tell me so I can eradicate them. Don't let the errorists win.

I feel i learned more about writing reading your post than i did in all the years I took English. Thank you.

Thank you so much.

I think there's a lot of unnecessary rot taught in English classes - certainly, one of my biggest tasks as an editor is to get writers (and junior editors) to unlearn much of what they've been taught and operate on KISS principles - keep it simple, stoopid.

At the end of the day, writing isn't hard. It's just a form of communication - if you can tell your mates a story at the pub, you can write.

I still apparently don't understand grammar because i try to submit stuff to groups and they denied it and tell me that there's to much wrong grammar and that other groups may be happy to have my art T.t wtf and they say we WILL tell you EXACTLY what wrong and grammar is a very bod topic.

Hi. I noticed your comment here and wanted to add that this 'problem' can also be helped by reading more. If you expose yourself to good writing, and read a lot, your grammar will improve. You'll start to develop a sense of when something you've written, or something you're reading, just isn't working. Good luck.

i need to get a thesaurus but for now i'll use online ones maybe i'll get one of these books sometime. I just hope that my writing will improve with time. I want my readers to feel like there in the book; like how i feel when i read some peoples stories.

An online thesaurus is definitely better than no thesaurus at all.

Regarding drawing readers into a story, this is where practice comes in. There are techniques you will learn and apply, or discover for yourself.

Thank you for the favourites, by the way.

Hey, look at this. I'm describing the way I write.

Except for some reason you wrote it. I kept wanting to add stuff to your guide.

So do I.

It's a lot more hassle to describe it than it is to do it.

I'm very glad. The next sections will be a bit more practical, so may help more.

Thank you.

I've already spotted one escaped grammatical, so I'll have to put a corrected version up soon (it's a fairly subtle one, and no one else has pointed it out yet, so I'm not in a rush).

I feel your pain.
I feel your pain.
In November I get my degree in English with a concentration in Professional/Technical Writing. Now that I've learned the craft the editorial part of my brain runs on automatic. I even take time to perfect my sentences in forums and look at paragraph presentation.
uhh.

After 20 years, I often switch off in forums to give my brain a break.

My main concern in these pieces is avoiding errors, because it's a well-known fact that if you try to tell people how to write better, it will come back and bite you.
