Combining body language and the few preset face expressions (and even a few face rigs) takes a lot of practice
why?
because Valve/whoever is in charge of updating SFM never finished sfm properly and therefore player models are missing face rigs!

I extremely rarely uses any presets ever in SFM since I think they are rater "monotone" (With some exceptions of Non-HWM models).
But Body language makes up most of the expressions.
(As well as I have never heard about face rigs)

and since tf2 has a cartoonish style (at least in the models), overexaggerated poses actually look pretty normal!
