Description
Bonus points if you can tell me where each figure comes from. This is a little joke about how similar traditional cloths in the Balkans tend to be and how everyone here quarrels about who came up with which piece of clothing first... Also we hate each other...Related content

From right to left, you got 1 out of 4
It's actually Bulgarian, Serbian, Greek and Albanian from left to right.
There is a Greek idiom that is almost exactly like that: "Among the blind, the one-eyed reigns".
There is also a similar anecdote, about a man who envies his neighbor because he has a goat that provides him with milk and cheese.
When he gets to have 1 wish granted, rather than asking for a goat himself, he asks for the neighbor's goat to die.
I don't think it is the Ottoman rule. If anything a common resentment for the Ottomans should unite us not divide us further.
If you wish to hear my further thoughts on this check my reply to Hyo38 's comment.

Yeah, those idioms...
I'll have a look, thanks!

BRILLIANT!!!
I think I know smth about Balkanians, so... I'll try to guess))
First figure is Bulgarian (I got it from his shoes), second is 100% Serbian (sajkaca & opanci, yeeeeeah), third is Greek (of course!) and the last is Albanian)))
So, is that the answer?))

DIN DIN DIN DIN! WE HAVE A WINNER! I am actually surprised that so many confused the Serb for Bulgarian!
True, we all love Big Brother Russia. The only ones I am not sure about are the Bosnians, the Croats and the Albanians (dew to Russian support for Serbia)
P.s.: Sorry I don't write in Greek, but the iPhone turns greek characters to gibberish.

Yeeeeah
Actually, I've learnt some stuff about Balkan national costumes while drawing my "Balkan lands personifications" last year, so... It was not smth occasional)))
BTW, why your Bulgarian is blond? There're no blond hair in ethnic Bulgarians... for sure! Albanians, Romanians, Slovenians, Croatians... but not Bulgarians

Δεν έχω πάει ποτέ Βουλγαρία (ακόμα!). Αλλά εδώ υπάρχουν ξανθοί Έλληνες, Βούλγαροι δεν θα υπάρχουν;
Και οι δυο γλώσσες μου αρέσουν. Τα Ελληνικά φυσικά τα αγαπάω, απλά τα έχουμε απλουστεύσει και πολλές λέξεις δεν τις χρησιμοποιούμε πολυ
Τα Αγγλικά τα αγάπησα από τον Tolkien αλλά και εκεί βλέπω πολλούς να μιλάνε με "Uhm... like... you know..." 25 φορές σε κάθε πρόταση και φρικάρω.
P.S. Δεν φαντάζεσαι...

Ooooh boy, I'm not even sure if I should give it a try??? Here we go, left to right; Albanian, Bulgarian, Greek and Serbian
(On a scale of 1 to thrown into Black Sea by Black Sea mafia, how dead I am?)
Not going to lie as a non-Balkanian (although half of my family is from Pristina and Thessaloniki) except Greek clothing, most Balkanian clothing looks so similar Q.Q (now it's my time to run i guess?? yes)

Meh... 1 out of 4. It's actually Bulgarian, Serbian, Greek and Albanian.
By the way you just called a Bulgarian an Albanian and an Albanian a Serbian.
That spells death for you in 3 different countries
But since good ol' Strider gives you a pass I guess you are safe. You got the Greek right so you know in what direction you should run to

Why do the Balkan folks hate each other so much anyway?
👍: 0 ⏩: 3
NikosBoukouvalas In reply to Hyo38 [2017-05-14 15:25:54 +0000 UTC]
Many reasons.
1) Too many countries and not enough land.
2) Most nations here also have a very long history and almost everyone has fought with everyone at some point.
3) The Ottoman Rule: Before the Ottoman Conquests, the nations were separated and it was relatively easy to record the evolution of their culture (dress, cuisine etc) During the Ottoman times this wasn't the case. So when the different nations rose up against the Turks and got their own countries, they tried to claim many shared cultural elements as solely their own and make them part of their national identity. This caused conflict. For example the "Fustanella" skirt is shared by both Albanians and Greeks. It evolved some time during the Ottoman period and no one knows who came up with it first: Greeks claim it evolved from Ancient Greek and Byzantine Tunics, while Albanians claim it is an Albanian innovation. There is no evidence to back up the validity of either of these claims. So we quarrel on...
4) Religious differences: Some Orthodox Christians see Balkan Muslims as bootlickers to the Turks and/or potential Jihadists/Terrorists and some Muslims see Orthodox Christians as oppressors and/or unworthy kaffirs.
5) Ex-Yugoslavia members. The Yugoslav wars still persist in the memory of many Balkan nations with many accusing many for treachery and various war-crimes.
6) Irredentism: Every nation wanted to restore it's Empire during the Ottoman Yoke. The problem is that all these Empires' (Byzantine,Serbian,Bulgarian) borders at their greatest extent, would often covered the same territory. Many Cities are important or even Sacred for more than one nation. Therefor conflict arises...
With that said not everyone hates everyone anymore. Serbia and Greece have excellent relations, so much so that they joined wars for each other: In WW1 Vienna asked Greece to back-stab Serbia, to which we replied "Greece is too small a country to do such big a malice". Likewise in WW2 the Germans asked Serbia (Yugoslavia) to let the Germans pass through their territory in order to attack Greece. The Yugoslav Government agreed only for the enraged Serbs to overthrow them 2 days later.
We also have good relations with Bulgaria even though we fought against each other since... forever. I guess we are frienemies now.

Because of the unfair treatment at the hands of the Ottomans and the loss of territories during the Balkan wars, the First and Second world wars and the displacement of many people of one ethnicty to a totaly different geographical region.

Most Americans, if they haven't paid attention in the 90s with the breakup of Yugoslavia or were too young, wouldn't even know where the Balkans are.
Joking aside, it did took me a while to get what this comic means. My dad did say to me on how he admires Tito for uniting everyone in the Balkans into one nation of Yugoslavia. Now the Yugoslavia is no more, and it's divided into different warring countries. Even at peace times, as my dad shows me a documentary on their sports, people of opposing countries in the audience are still violent towards each other.

I agree, although not every Balkan country was part of Yugoslavia. Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and a few others were their own states.
I've heard Serbians say that their parents used to say "When Tito dies, Yugoslavs are going to kill each other. We are bloody insane" Seems they were right.

Unfortunately Yugoslavia was only a good idea on paper and eventually member states would have lost their cultural identity. And to clarify, nobody in the Balkans is warring with anybody else at least currently. And Soccer fans are violent all across Europe, not just the Balkans.

Yeah. Sorry about my ignorance as I've never been to Europe. I only know what I've been taught and informed.
I do find it strange that soccer isn't a big deal in the US than the world. Most drunken violence I hear in the news are either on baseball or American football.

It is easy to practice in poorer countries; all you need is one ball and no expensive equipment compared to other sports.

Yes and no, since nowadays the sport has turned into one of the most expensive professional sports in the world. Lucrative if you have billions to lose that I personally think are best put to other uses.
