Description
Bonus points if you can tell me where each figure comes from. This is a little joke about how similar traditional cloths in the Balkans tend to be and how everyone here quarrels about who came up with which piece of clothing first... Also we hate each other...Related content

You'd think their cultural similarities would make the Balkan Cultures less likely to fight.Β

Yeah... But it turns out we will argue and fight about who came up with each shared element first.Β

Nope. I almost mixed up the Serbian and the Bulgarian, but then I remembered that the Bulgarians have those fuzzy hats

I really like this piece. Will u consider doing something similar in the future? Like with other countries like hungary, croatia, romania etc. I might do it myself just I'm horrible at drawing people and clothes.

Hmmm. I changed my mind, it could be way simplier. There would be only two characters a polish and a hungarian one, and the reason why I had this idea cos poland and hungary consider each other as friends, we even have a common saying:Β link Β
Also both of them famous from their calvaries, like the napoleonic era hussars came from the medieval hungarian hussars during the ottaman wars, poland had the winged hussars in medieval, but in napoleonic era the uhlans came out from their ranks. So I thought the hungarian one could dress as a hussar and the polish one as an uhlan.
Reference for the uhlan:1 , 2 Β
Reference for the hussar:1 , 2
Don't forget the moustaches, also i think the hungarian one should have brown hair, while the polish one should be lighter brown or even blonde.

Love it. It's really cool that you've put the Macedonia region costume for the Bulgarian

Yeah, I picked it because I wanted to show that the fustanella isn't exclusively Albanian or Greek and because with everyone else wearing trousers, the Greek would stand out, thus spoiling the whole joke. Plus it is a really cool costume!

great drawing, good joke, nice drawing of traditional costumes...
now, lemme guess which blakan costume is which... (im starting from left to right...) :
albanian, serbian, greek (foustanella!), and bosnian?
with that being said, i always liked that the greeks took the old oriental clothing style of the turks, and they changed it into a more elegant, greek styled outfit for the klephtes+armatoloi:
i mean, instead of the fez we used a red wool hat with a cross on it, instead of the turkish pointy-shoes we used the modified greek shoes of ''tsarouhia'', with a round piece of black wool on them, we created a new vest with gilded details, and we redesigned the skirt/foustanella into a distinct design, while we also added 400 folds in our skirt, 1 for each year that we suffered in the ottoman's barbaric hands....
so yeah, in my eyes, the traditional 1821 greek outfit looks very awesome, customized and greek to me, it also looks heroic and beautiful to me!
a symbol of resistance.
as for the balkans fighting eachother, thats true...
most balkan countries hated eachother, and in yugoslavia, most of its nations really hated eachother, and they often wanted to overpower their counterpart.
one known case is the long-standing feud between serbia and croatia...
(tho greece has been a good ally with serbia, and vice-versa.)
anyways, great drawing once again, nikos!Β
keep up the great work!

Serbians, Bosnians, Croatians, Albanians... Don't get them mixed up or they will kill you.

If a coral snake (venomous) bites you and you confuse it for a scarlet king snake (harmless) , the bite will kill you. If you confuse a Serb with an Albanian for instance, he'll kill you because you insulted him.

To most foreigners they might seem similar, but they have quite a few differences and take pride in those differences. Most important of all, however, is that basically every nation in the region hates each other.Β They have a long history of wars, genocides, grievances for territory, etc. Mix up a croatian for a serbian, he will probably kill you, and vice-versa. A Serbian for a Bosnian, a Albanian for a Greek, a Montenegrin for a Makedonian, etc etc and Vice versa for all.
I guess it's like... mixing a Vietnamese for a Chinese. They don't really like each other and doing so will probably piss the person off.

Yeah, he probably just thought you were a fool. But still, Canadians and Americans haven't been murdering each other since before the 11th century. And they surely didn't try to genocide each other in one of bloodiest conflicts of recent years (Yugoslav Wars).
No they are not. They have very different cultures. Even their languages are quite different.

You mean the 1812 war? That happened hundreds of years ago? And was pratically the only war fought between the US and Canadians?
You know, why did you even bother asking if you were just going to act like a complete idiot about it? I mean, are you really this stupid or you're just acting like one for god-knows what for?

NikosBoukouvalas In reply to EgglyBagleface [2017-05-15 12:54:57 +0000 UTC]
Because Serbians and Albanians hate each other. Calling a Serbian or confusing them with an Albanian is an insult to them because they are "rival nations". Same if you confuse a Greek with a Turk, a Romanian with a Roma or a Hungarian... the list goes on.

Okay, I know the first three from left to right are: Bulgarian, Serb (The hat is a dead-giveaway, lol), and Greek (OF COURSE). Β As for the last one, I'm going to say either Montenegrin or Albanian(?).Β

Oh damn, lol. Β I was actually leaning toward Montenegrin, but I was thinking Albanian as well.
I need one myself! Β I've always wanted to go to Belgrade, I hear it's wonderful. Β I found an old Yugoslav/Serbian airborne helmet from the 90's for about 20 Euros. Β They're surprisingly cheap.

Okay, a wild guess: Slovene, Croat, Serb, Macedonian. The only thing is, I don't see the "Cravat", which comes from the Croatians, unless it's on the first guy on the left.
A friend of mine from the Balkans told me saying that went something like if the other guy is blind, and my crowd only has one eye, we're happy. Or something like that. Do you think all the anger comes from the centuries of Ottoman rule?
