Description Once upon a time, a fisherman accidentally caught a mermaid in his net. It was love at first sight. A romance ensued. Alas, it was short lived, for they soon realized they had some incompatible body parts. Unable to consummate their relationship, the mermaid lost interest, visited less frequently and finally all but disappeared into the deep blue. The fisherman got deep in his bottles to slake the thirst of his unrequited love.

He also tried to lose himself in his trade, but one eye was always scanning the coast or the horizon for a glimpse of his beloved. Nevertheless, he managed to haul in enough of the sea's bounty to afford his own boat. He also purchased a small shack from which to sell his goods. He became a merchant, a fishmonger. And as you might imagine, having dated a mermaid afforded him a small degree of local fame. So business was quite good.

Fishing and drinking, drinking and fishing; Months turned into years. Despite his moderate material wealth, his heart was still destitute. He still scoured the sea for his long lost sweetheart. One day he caught a magical fish. It pled to be thrown back in and offered to grant a wish in exchange for its freedom. The piscator wished to be half fish, the mermaid would surely take him back then! The fish explained that such a transformation would take some time, but was let go with the monger's confidence.

Days became weeks and the fishmonger realized the err of his wish. His drunken tongue hadn't specified which half of his body was to be morphed into a fish. It was apparent from the scales forming on his cheeks, the magic fish had magicked the wrong half. The malice of this enchantment was obvious, the fish wished to avenge his brethren who had been baked, stuffed, chipped and chowdered throughout the years. So, the fishmonger swore his own vengeance. His love of the sea became a lust for salty blood.

(There are plenty of fish in the sea, make sure you have the right tackle.)

Which movie? I get an occasional comparison to Lovecraft but don't really know much about his work.
I read the "Necronomicon" when I was young, I thought it was based on an actual ancient religion, he fooled me ;]

Dagon but it's based more on another story of HP than the title. You'd enjoy his stuff, though you might find the graphic novel adaptations of his stories more engaging since he wrote in the old fashioned style. It's good stuff though.

I like old fashion speak, and I enjoyed forming my own visions about the few works of his I have red.
So maybe I'll like his original text :]

Yeah me too. Not all the time but I love how they used to write more poetic. I hate gritty writing, a little grit is good but too much and everything sounds like a text is is unemotional.

Great image.

Fish, money, muscles, cereals and women (or men) are similar: Every logic model grants that there are method that allow to get plenty, and people that knows said methods.

Yep, you've got to know how to play the game. I guess my story is related to that idea.

Even knowing that there are methods helps in living a better life by understanding a pratical truth about "justice"

Knowledge is always useful, even if it isn't used in a practical or obvious way.
Hmm, truth about justice. That can be very circumstantial and relative to different societies.
Truth is elusive and justice is hard to determine.

Perhaps i'm kinda cynical, but i wonder if "justice" is simply what happens.

This is one of those few pictures that I actually have shown to other people IRL (this has happened twice with art on DA) because I like it so much, especially if you read the story that comes along with it.
Love it to pieces! Grotesque and sad as it is!

it's always the problem with wishes...we NEVER have what we want...;]
because of language, often...

i adore your work
extremely complex
it takes timme to notice all the references, symbols, winks...in it
i recognize here your universal culture, dear

i see that, as me, you love tales ( those which end badly, it seems...)

nilwilnil In reply to SophieDereal [2017-06-24 23:21:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, words should be measured more accurately, especially when weighing in with magical fish!
Thank you for spending your time to recognize such things. What do you mean by universal culture? Love, lust, vengeance?
And yes, I love tales (and tail), both of which often end badly ;]

SophieDereal In reply to nilwilnil [2017-06-25 07:22:55 +0000 UTC]

i meant that you have a particularly great culture on a lot of subjects

yes...tales, tails...often end badly, speaking both of the same thing...loving passion ;]

nilwilnil In reply to SophieDereal [2017-06-25 12:22:36 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't sure "tail" would translate quite right, but I guess it is universal culture, hehe.

he! he!....

nilwilnil In reply to SophieDereal [2017-06-25 21:57:39 +0000 UTC]

Funny, in English slang, it means "a piece of ass", usually (not always) referring to a female.

SophieDereal In reply to nilwilnil [2017-06-25 22:03:36 +0000 UTC]

i always thought that "English" and associated have problems with genres...lol!

nilwilnil In reply to SophieDereal [2017-06-25 22:08:14 +0000 UTC]

Not so with the French?
I've noticed when Google translates Polish, it has trouble with gender pronouns.
I'm not sure if that is an issue with Google or the language.

SophieDereal In reply to nilwilnil [2017-06-26 20:37:28 +0000 UTC]

yes...there are two genres in French
but i noticed that my English friends never know when use masculin or feminin for words
seems complicated...;]

I could write a comment as long as the awesome fable accompanying this, so much I want to say.

You must have done a lot of studying and research doing this, great work defining his muscles.

The tattoos are fantastic, the way they conform with the skin and are very realistic, I think most people would end up with them looking
detached. I really can’t say enough about how well he came out and the skill involved.

The blood on the knife, again, very hard to do, blood is something many people have a hard time doing.

Poor fish, great work, color tones are flawless. The lures and everything on the shelf, great details, nice touch adding the octopus!

Even starfish on the post, you don’t miss anything.

This must have taken a very very long time, phenomenal work!

Now I have a sudden craving to go make a tuna sandwich.

Glad you like the story, I debated posting it.
I've realized how much I've forgotten during my hiatus from art. I definitely needed some anatomy refreshers. If you're interested, check out Proko and Sycra on youtube, they have a bunch of anatomy tuts. The tattoos, the blood, they're alright. Like we were saying the other day, I'm seeing things I should fix now. One thing I need to work on is those water lines.

This took about a week, hard to say how many hours. It actually evolved from another drawing idea.
The octopus makes me happy, he deserves his own story!
Hope you enjoyed your sandwich.
