Description
A quick step by step of how I made this piece:It was pretty easy to do, it just took several steps. I thought it might help people to see how it was done in stages.

My problem is I have been using Photoshop for so long I am scared to try anything else. There is so much pixelation in the lines it looks very rough cut by the time I am done with it. I guess I need to re-evaluate my art programs.

I use both Illustrator and Photoshop. In this one, you can see the second step is me doing the lines in Illustrator, but step 1 and everything after 2 is Photoshop. You just can't beat Illustrator for clean, simple lines. Best of all, when you import an Illustrator object (as easy as COPY in Illustrator and PASTE in photoshop), if you leave it as an OBJECT (it will ask you when you paste what kind of import you want to do), you can double-click the layer any time to take the object back to Illustrator to modify the lines. Then when you save the file, it will automatically update the photoshop vector layer.
Also, what are you doing up so late!?

Well crud.....I ended up loosing my Illustrator program because of a hard drive crash. And I was only using photoshop for the kids books I was illustrating so I never really tought I would ever need it again! I gotta get Illustrator back on my computer!
As for why I am up so late: It's a side effect of my job at the aquarium. It's the kind of work that leaves you physically exhausted, but mentally racing at the end of the day, and the result...horrible insomina! That and the sleep apnea hasn't helped. JUST....CAN'T.....TURN....MY MIND....OFF!!!!!

Do what I do: write stories in your head. Even if you don't sleep, you don't begin to hate and resent the bed (which worsens insomnia).

I've really got to re-try illustrator. It was giving me problems before, but I really want smooth lines like those.

Oh wow cool thanks. the pen tool in PS isn't too bad. It just takes awhile. Especially when vectoring.

The pen tool in Illustrator is much more powerful, though they work similarly when creating a path.
