I didn't have much to go on other than a simple description of the scene so I did what I could. The hair is feminine looking to me, but the description said "he" so I went with male features. Several notes are in the image itself, but this time I decided to do something different and upload the actual PSD file with layers so you could see exactly what each layer looks like by turning their visibility on and off. I hope that helps make sense of what I did and why.

As always, you have to keep what makes sense and discard what doesn't. Some of the changes I made may not work for you... no worries if so. Make it yours and keep the things about your style that you like

EDIT: I can already see a bunch of things I'd change like making the hooves a little larger (more masculine), but this is probably a good start and I've run out of time for today

EDIT2: It sounds like it's a mare after all... oops. I added a quick sketch that's more feminine at the bottom.
