Description [edit] Wow... really? This is my most favorited AND commented deviation? Within the first WEEK of being on DA? Well I guess HTTYD is quite the phenomenon right now. (For good reason.) And thanks to the groups for requesting to add my drawing![/edit]

I know, I know... *shot*

It's not my fault! I just HAD to draw this instead of inking the next comic pages! I saw How to Train Your Dragon, and how can anyone NOT draw Toothless and Hiccup after seeing it?! AHH! Everything about the movie was wonderful. The simple plot was incredibly character-driven, and the characters themselves were all so perfect in their portrayals. It was funny, poignant, and oh, just...and the animation!

Drawn for my friend Chel with copic/prismacolor markers, faber-pitt pens, and a gel pen. Epic fail on Hiccup's leg.

*spoilerspoilerspoilerspoilerspoiler*
This is inspired by our favorite scene where Hiccup gets out of bed and discovers he didn't quite come out in one piece. It was just so adorable and touching when Toothless helps him hobble away. The little Night Fury is so reliant on empathetic Hiccup to fly (and survive), and now Hiccup relies on him just as much. SUCH a good story. A "children's" film that has the audacity to amputate the limb of their protagonist (what respect for the characters to treat them as REAL people who CAN and DO get hurt when they do crazy things!) and manages to capture the utter feeling of conflict and violence within the dragon/viking world WITHOUT shedding a drop of blood on screen automatically wins my full respect and my heart.

Oh goodness, I am so happy to hear you say that. All of that! I've never been terribly shy on the Internet, so feel free to add me on Facebook (facebook.com/lilbluestem) or Skype (lilbluestem [Rachel Roth]). I enjoy random conversations about interpretations (musical or literary or otherwise for that matter!).

And oh goodness, there is just so much to say about the movie... I'm glad that others pick up on its depth. It appeals to so many people, but the trick is figuring out WHY it's so appealing. It's really impacted me, and I felt pretty silly for being such an advocate for the movie and being so touched by the movie, so I actually spent some time just mentally analyzing both myself and the movie searching for the answer to "WHY is this movie so good?", and I now have an insanely (pathetically?) extravagant set of points to back up my feelings about the film.

I think that we think about it so much because others don't. As a kids movie most would disregard it as low quality, but a movies target audience age shouldn't change the quality of the film. The first time I went to see the movie i went with my parents. After seeing it I was to happy for words but my parents said it was simplistic. After not talking to them for a good ten minutes i contemplated this. Since it was more of a kids movie they automatically judged it's quality and watched the screen and no the actual movie.
I can truthfully say that i was moved more by HTTYD than i was by blood diamond or planet earth! I am not moved by movies! Never am I moved by books, stories, nothing! The closest felling i got when i watched any other movie was when i watched 9 by tim burton ( If you havent seen it do it now cause it was kick ass... and so was kick ass but moving on!).
i sometimes wonder why i love music and writting so much. I love to really listen to the music and pick out the specific instruments and like you said where they used the same piece in different music with different instruments and tempos to give different effects on the listener. the only other person i know who does the same amount of obessing over music as i do is my english teacher. My music instructor hears it but won't express how it makes her feel and understanding how it makes you feel is the other half to understanding music.

You're absolutely right. And contrastingly, many folks do love it and are moved/touched by its depth... without being able to figure out why. It's the idea that children's movies ARE by default simplistic. In reality, this is the most deep and effective film I've seen in ages. It's easier to imagine that a movie CAN be deep in spite of its target audience if we remember that adults are behind the film. And children, like I've said (idk if I said it to you, but I've said it a lot haha), children know when they've been given something "for kids." Younger children call it "for babies." They can tell when something is complex and moving in contrast to something meant for their "simple" enjoyment. Even if they can't tell you WHY they like the more complex movie, they'll tell you that they like it better. They're very in tune to that kind of thing.

I'm glad you have someone to discuss these things with! Sometimes that's the most frustrating part--nobody wants to hear our perspectives, especially when that perspective regards something as silly as a kid's film. But I tell you, I've become one of HTTYD's best advertisements on this campus, telling people about it anyway. I'm still stunned by it. I wish I could buy it NOW!

Me to! I want movie NOW! Spread the wise words and lyrics of John Powell and Toothless! who are your favorite characters? Mine are the twins. I adore them and their violent banter! I think because I can relate more to them than the other characters, which is weird because i barely ever fight with my older brother and we are not twins! I always wanted one though. Maybe I just wanted the companionship. I might just be so fastinated in them because i can see a lot of myself in ruffnut. maybe i've just been thinking to much about the movie!
I'm really contemplating going to walmart and getting a backpack with a dragon on it! or maybe a lunchbox cause i need one for my work this summer. I want mine to have toothless on it!

I like Toothless and Hiccup best, and yes yes yes, EVERYONE loves them of course. But they're designed to make us love them, and of all the other characters their personalities were developed and explored the most. So I like them best. The twins are surprisingly popular though! Hahaha. You have a good point about them. But you can't think too much about it. Well...actually...you can. Heh. I've spent the last couple hours working on a meme. I've never spent this much time on a meme before. But it's fun!

The backpacks were pretty neat. I chose the hooded towels. Mine has a viking hat hood with horns! Woo! XD I'm so excited to swim this summer so I can use my new hooded viking towel!! WAH

Ahhhhhhhh! Cool! Can't wait to see your meme!
I think that the twins are so popular because people look at them and automatically think of it as a perfect situation for a twins and hiccup relationship thingy. I thinks its called twiccup or something? kinda funny how people can turn a kids movies characters into a kind of taboo erotic subject.

Yeah.... ew... shipping might ruin the movie experience for me. D: I prefer the innocent film version of the characters who are too shy to do much more than peck each other on the cheek as quickly as possible (preceded by some punching).

Saylen2013 In reply to Nimfalas [2010-04-21 13:20:17 +0000 UTC]

yup, but i guess maintaining the origional innocence of the movie would stifle others creativity. I know that people are allowed to draw and write what they want but some of the stuff i've seen is just flat out soft core porn. I prefer the pecking, punching, and walking away. its cuter that way!

Hehe... I worked for a nature center last summer. His name used to be Willow, but then we found out he is a boy. I'm not sure, but I think they changed it to "Castor."

He is not mine to share, but I wouldn't let you have him anyway. <3 (He's kind of become a brat though. haha)

Eeeeeeeee I know! I squealed audibly, and the only thing that kept me from crying then was the dialogue/events immediately after they hobble to the door. (Surely I'm not the only one insanely amused that Hiccup tells Toothless [the Night Fury!!] to stay inside when he opens the door and sees dragons running rampant through the village! Pahahaha! And Toothless obeys, so Hiccup goes outside to "take care of" the apparent dragon problem without his dragon buddy to back him up. Hehehehe. They're so cute and protective of each other.)

Of course! I mean, for goodness' sake, that missing tail fin is an essential part of his character!! (And it makes Hiccup's malady at the end even more meaningful...)

Even after I left the theater I couldn't believe they actually had the bravery to end the movie like this. It was so touching, my husband started crying. <3 This piece is really sweet, I love Hiccup's little freckles.

Nimfalas In reply to RetroOutro [2010-04-19 04:23:05 +0000 UTC]

Well thank you... I completely agree, but that single gutsy move they made to amputate Hiccup's leg made the movie unforgettable. It just pricks you in such a way that it stays with you. The saddest moment isn't the terror that Hiccup might be dead--it's Hiccup's realization that he has suffered a permanent consequence for his crazy and risky bravery. And it's the secondary realization that Toothless is right there with him, to support him and help him just as Hiccup supported and helped Toothless when he was flightless in the clearing.

<3 I'm in love with this movie. The soundtrack is incredible too, if you're interested in movie scores.

Oh yeah. You've got to respect a "children's" movie that has the balls to amputate its protagonist's limb. Finally a movie that really respects its characters and has every ounce of the heartfelt drama we seek in adult movies without the accompanying gore or sex (which often take away from the meaningfulness of the films). I'm actually impressed that in spite of the setting and content (dragon-slaying, war-bound vikings!!) they put together a blood-free movie. I feel it adds to the film's character and integrity. Bwah. I'm in love with it.
