Description
"Tie That Binds" chapter one page twenty-eight.Should this page be labeled "mature"?
According to my "beta" (my seventh-grade little bro, if that counts
I should've made that more obvious...my bad.
So I decided that being lazy and filling solid backgrounds with the paintbucket tool looks horrible compared to the markers, so I got off my lazy bum and colored some actual backgrounds this time. YAY!

I'm amazed at how so much can happen in six panels. @.O (MY stories tend to get a bit... rambly... Still honing that 'don't overload the action with description' skill. ^^' )

Pacing is definitely something that's hard and important in a comic. It's hard to find a balance sometimes...

And not just comics, either - stories, reports, jokes... Anything with a plot, it seems.

Man, the art in that series is just beautiful, it's too bad more of their series wasn't printed on Baxter paper...
Look at any comic nowadays, and any older comic, and the amount of panels, words, detail, etc... is much more in the older ones than today. The older ones also have fewer close ups and ads, it seems. Comics seem to be going downhill. But at least the paper, coloring and digital effects are better...

Hear, hear! Too true. Man, if the old comics had our current techniques...but then, the simple coloring just adds to the character of those oldies. And makes the lineart stand out more...in my eyes, anyway.
Reading anything (graphic novels included) should be intellectual and emotional. Not only does the author have to bring something to the work, but the reader has to bring his or her own ideas up to the plate to interpret and feed off of the author's ideas. I think the trouble with the recent Teen Titans issues (as opposed to the Titans in their prime, or even the Titans just around Raven's rebirth) is just the fact that the writers don't give us a lot of room to imagine. They slam a lot of action and violence in our faces without giving us a chance to fall in love with the characters for....well, their character. Yeah, Megan can fight...but I barely get a chance to breathe between fist-slamming, gut-wrenching action sequences. I'm probably exaggerating, but the concept's the same. Engage my imagination! Engage my emotions! I just want to feel the characters again.
Oops. I ranted a bit.
And you're right--at least the pages LOOK better. XD

Yeah, the older art is always classic, and painted instead of with the computers and stuff, the colours have their own style compared to nowadays.
Agreed! That's a nice thing about novels that comic can't have as much of, because they take away the visual interpretation, like a movie. Movies almost always disappoint. Some of the older Titans comics (New Teen Titans #8, for example) focused mainly on character, and NO fighting. I can think of a few of Marv and George's books that had no or very little action, yet powerful stories. The Wedding of Donna Troy, "Shades of Gray", (dunno the issue #...) etc...that's the great thing about those two creators. They strived for emotional depth to their characters! (Hey, I'm ranting too...) Maybe we're falling into the 90's again...XP

Nimfalas In reply to rentheadtitansfan [2009-01-01 20:34:50 +0000 UTC]
Ooo...I loved Donna's wedding... But yes, they had amazing issues with little violence. And even in those epic battle issues, the duo was constantly building the characters.
Take ToT for example--most of Trigon's terror was the personal drama inflicted on each individual Titan. It wasn't just the earth that was in jeopardy--it was their souls. And you felt their trama in your own soul. So in this battle against a teammate and a battle against ultimate evil, the real battle for the Titans was against themselves. That's what made it so dramatic--the emotions were so real and so personal that your heart ached for them. Had the story focused on plot (that is, stunning action poses and witty anti-Trigon/Raven plans), the story would have had NO power whatsoever. It continues to affect us today because it wasn't really about Trigon--it was about his terror.
I WISH we were falling into the 90s again!

rentheadtitansfan In reply to Nimfalas [2009-01-01 21:13:18 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, and it had some crazy cameos as well
How true! Just looking at a page with a picture of a twisted soul on a column of others can make you think "Whoa, they're mind is in trauma!". I get what you mean with the feeling the emotions yourself, it's easy to get charged up reading a novel or comic, as well as movies, and sometimes even music. I own George Perez: Storyteller, and in one part he says how he'll be drawing and his wife will come in and ask if he's okay, when he's just scowling or grinning because whoever he's drawing is doing the same. That is how to make a comic, man!
Haha, so if the 90's is the dark age, we must be in the the "Apocalyptic era of comics".
Juts another thing on my mind; did you hear about the Judas Contract movie they were supposed to release? Apparently it's to be animated and is already written as a screenplay by Marv Wolfman, but they 'ostponed' it because there isn't a big enough fan base? There's three Titans books out now, not to mention all the miniseries specials, and the show boosted popularity in kids! That's no excuse, in my opinion. It's like the 'lost Titans graphic novel' called Games. DC just needs to set up the group with more attention!

Whoa, dude, nice comic! I absolutely ADORE panel 3, with the twisted souls, etc...from Terror of Trigon, right? "As real as if he himself had experienced it in some distant life..." That one got me thinking...is that another homage to Marv&George's era? Makes enough sense, maybe the 'toon Titans live on Earth 54...or some other one, haha.
π: 0 β©: 1
Nimfalas In reply to rentheadtitansfan [2008-12-29 13:20:06 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! Yes, it was definitely influenced by the ToT saga. I always thought the Marv/George version carried a LOT more emotion, and...well, it was essentially more profound reading it out of their pages. There are obvious reasons as to why they had to water it down and alter it for the cartoon version, but I still wish they had kept more of the original in mind.
I'm still sticking with the cartoon's background. Though my rock people look a lot more like tortured souls than the poor civilians frozen in stone in the 'toon!

Heh, actually wrote a little piece on what I'd to see happen to fix Jericho and all (going right off from the current situation of his), but don't think I'll post it, it's more wish-fulfillment than an actual story (or maybe it's just more visual than written). Could work though. Here's hoping DC stops hamfisting the Titans day in and out to get people to buy them.

Hmmm... does this mean that Raven's soul was protecting Jerhico from her "evil side"/Trigon, and it finally gave out and all the horrible knowledge of Trigon that Raven has suddenly flooded into Jerhico's mind?
Yeah, I couldn't quite tell if Jerhico had made contact with Slade or Gypsum, but if you look closely, you see that little mark that indicates Gypsum is turning toward the duo as she rises, and Slade turns toward Gypsum, so it would make more sense for Jerhico to have made contact with Gypsum. It's not slap-you-in-the-face obvious, but it would seem more likely for Jerhico to get Gypsum than Slade.
P.S. - I was curious as to what specific font/fonts you use from blambot.com.

I'm not confirming anything, but you may be on the right track.
I still adore your reasoning skills, as usual.
I use many, but I generally use "digital strip" for dialogue and "Crime Fighter" and "A.C.M.E." something-or-other for the boxes. I also love "Deathrattle", "Badaboom", and "Vaporized" for specialized little bits of random text. All of those fonts can be downloaded for free.
