After the holocaust, many of the plants that populated the once lush forest died out; as a result, many of the animals fed upon the foliage found themselves desperate for food. Some of the deer began to feed on radioactive fungus, which, unfortunately for them, began to feed on them from the inside out. Once ingested, the fungus will begin to sprout from the most external of areas (the back, the head, and limbs) and render the host blind. It soon burrows inward, towards the brain, where it takes root and forces the creature to devour more of the fungi. In their last throes of torment, the deer will emit ghostly wails, in which they received their name.
