Description
Oh how I just loooove african women with their big afro hairI've wanted to do something like this for a really long time and finally I think managed to pull it off! This was so much fun to do... I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed painting it
I looked up English words of African origin with and the words jazz and jukebox came up... hence the title haha
The background pattern is free from all-free-download.com, because well... when I try to make patterns they turn out far too unsteady haha!
If you like it, please let me know what you think!

This is a nice piece. I was particularly drawn to the warm color palette. The background also adds plenty of mood to the drawing.
some of the anatomical suggestions were already said before. Do some studies on anatomy (Quick poses and Figure and Gesture drawings are a good way to go).Β
The lighting looks proper, though as also previously stated, you will get more depth out of your drawing with stronger contrasts. Her head wrap has an interesting design and well defined folds. consider taking a look at the accessory's lighting. It should be casting some shadow on her forehead like the rest of her facial features.
Love the hair rendering. I think this has a great painterly style to it. Just be mindful how you chose to approach your work beforehand: adding details to some elements while maintaining others with less information (or a different style) may take away the artworks cohesiveness (unless it's was meant to be designed that way). Just a heads-up really, I don't think there is any loss in this piece. Levels of detail seem neatly distributed across the character.
This was a nicely done piece. Keep it up Ninated

I've got a lot of feedback on the rendering and I guess that's what I'm going to work more on... thanks a bunch for your feedback!

Wonderful choice of colours, I love the warm and comfortable feel this piece emits!
There's a few small things that would help improve it even more however.
a) Be careful with neck anatomy. The neck should generally connect almost directly to the ears or at the least very close to them. If the neck becomes too thin like here, it creates the impression that it wouldn't be able to support the weight of the head.
b) Be a bit bolder with highlights and shadows. It's the contrast that often makes a picture pop a lot more. Don't overdo it but a few well-placed darker shadows and a few equally well-placed highlights could help a great deal!
c) Push the rendering a bit further. Create more details, more harsh lines and maybe even some extra texture.
But even without these little tips, you've already created a really great piece! Keep up the good work!

thanks a lot for the feedback I did not realize the neck was too thin before you pointed that out, and you are totally right! I guess I need to practise skintones a bit more since I always tend to make too much or too little contrast... thanks for helping me

I really like this one! Orange-yellow color on dark skin and hair looks great.
There is nothing that bugs the eye with your lighting and shading. But still she looks flat.
You could enhance the shadows and highlights; and maybe make her skin a little darker so orange-dark contrast would look more intense.
Her dark curls are on the front and lighter ones are in the background. I think it would look better if you could re-place the lighter ones considering the direction of light.
One last thing; more texture on the skin would make it more realistic.
I love the patterns behind her. It adds the painting more traditional look.

Such aΒ soulful painting! <3 The curly/ kinky styling of hair is inspiring and her skin is so smooth and rich....My favorite part is probably the African print scarf she has around her hair. Just.....lovely!
