Description
A boy was sleepily walking near the stream in the morning holding a bucket in his right hand. He thought he’ll get some water for himself. He didn’t have a well, it would be too much trouble to dig one and the river was close enough anyway. It was splitting into two smaller streams not far away from here. He could see something white, about the height of his knees floating away on the other part of it through some bushes that grew on the island created by the two streams.
“Maybe a swan.” –He thought to himself smiling. It was really rare that one of them got around these parts.
“I should check it out…although I heard swans can be real jerks…” His thoughts were interrupted by a small chirping sound. He looked around to see where it was coming from. It was kind of hard to narrow it down from the trickling sound of the river. After a few seconds, he spotted something dark brownish being carried in the water. First he thought it might be some kind of bug, but based on the sounds it made soon he came to the conclusion that it’s a rodent. A mouse or a squirrel of some kind.
“Poor thing.” He thought. “I should probably fish the little guy out.” With a calm smile he stepped in the water. “Ooh…COLD!” He stepped in the current lowering his hand and let the small struggling thing drift into it. He wanted to quickly throw it to the shore in fear that from the panic the animal might bite his hand, but when he raised it out of the water his eyes widened in shock and he couldn’t move for a full minute. Under some paper-thin fabric and long black hair the form of a person seemed to appear. The boy quickly raised up his other hand too to form a cup for the tiny person to prevent her from falling down. He wasn’t that careful with the body before.
The girl just kept sneezing and although he knew that it must be pretty unpleasant to her but he just couldn’t help himself from finding the sound of the sneezing really adorable. He saw these tiny people before…just a few times in the forest. They always quickly disappeared amongst the leaves and he never got a good look at them from up close. They were so quick, he didn’t think he could get this intimate with one of them unless he was allowed to.
The cold water that rose up to his knees started to feel uncomfortable, he turned and walked out of the river. From the slight bumps the steps caused the little person was shoved a little on the palm, but he made sure she was safe at all times. When he got to the shore he felt that his boots were filled up by water. It was an uncomfortably soggy feeling but he didn’t really care much about that now.
The girl finally stopped with the coughing, and he noticed that she was peeking over her shoulder to look at him. He was attempting a reassuring smile to make her know that she’s safe, but in that moment the little girl turned away from him in fear. It should’ve offended him, or make him feel bad, but the simple motion of her was just somehow so…cute.
“-Aw! I could just eat you up!” –a squeaky sound came out of him that he didn’t even know he was able to make. The girl seemed to tremble again. He giggled.
“-Alright, bad choice of words…”-He raised his forefinger to stroke the little thing’s back to calm her down. “-Don’t worry, I will…”
“-Don’t touch me!” – She screamed suddenly, and she kicked the descending finger. Of course the force wasn’t significant enough to effect it, but the fingers owner got the message and he pulled back.
“A finger…” –She thought in panic. “I just kicked a finger almost the size of myself! Giants aren’t supposed to be this big! Shouldn’t stories be exaggerating? I heard they are the size of trees but honestly I thought they would only be three or four times taller than us… This…this is madness! What am I supposed to do?! It’s gonna freakin’ EAT me!”
“-Hey there…are you alright? How did you get in the water?” –She heard another deep rumble from above.
“And it TALKS! Giants aren’t supposed to talk! They never talk in the stories!” –She tried to look up again. Her arms were shaking in fear. Even if she hadn’t heard those tales about giants kidnapping and smashing people, the simple fact that she was held several feet up in the air by enormous hands was horrifying. She had to look directly upwards to see the face of the man leaning above her examining her with curious deep brown eyes.
“He looks HUNGRY! Oh God, how can creatures like this exist?” She wiped her face from the tears. She felt so miserable. All she wanted to do was to go home to her family. And now she not only almost drowned, but she was captured by a monster in the middle of the unknown lands without any way of escaping.
“-If you’re alright… I will put you down now.” Fern could literally feel the vibration through her skin caused by the words the giant spoke.
“-You’ll do What?” She looked up to her holder and even she was surprised that she had the courage to speak again.
“-Put you down. You’re so sad…ya made me feel bad.” Answered the giant looking to the side avoiding eye contact now.
“-Oh, so I’m the one who’s making YOU feel bad! You said you’re gonna eat me!” It was probably the frustration building in her in the last few weeks that gave her the power to yell with the mountain of a creature who was holding her captive. Although it seemed like he didn’t want her anymore.
“-That’s just an expression. I said I didn’t mean it.” The boy said and he looked like he was pretty embarrassed about what he said.
“-Stop yelling!” Fern covered her long ears with her hands. The booming speaking voice of the giant was tormenting her eardrums. Especially from this small distance.
“-You stop yelling! It’s my normal speaking voice.” He answered in annoyance.
“-It’s still too loud to me.” She mumbled in front of her.
“-What?”
“-You told me not to yell!” She said angrily up to the boy.
“-I’m taking it back then.” He said quickly looking to the side.
“-Fine!” She shouted.
“-Fine.” He whispered.
