and I plopped down and spontaneously came up with a new character tonight, partially based on my random inspiration from Nochi's UFA draik, Amanuet, and partially due to a theoretical conversation about what would happen if Jaraxle removed his mouth (don't ask, we're strange people).

Anywhow, her name is Mute. She's a bat who was severely abused as a little kid. Her mom got mad at her for talking too much when she was only about 5 years old, so she broke her jaw and then, because she was sick of the screaming and crying, she simply ripped open her cheeks, cut out her tongue, and sewed the whole thing shut with a sewing needle and some thread. As a result, she can't talk. (And in case anyone wonders how she eats, I believe she uses a feeding tube and/or IV, now, but back while she was still living at home, her mom ripped a hole in teh stitches over her mouth just enough that she could sort of slurp through a straw. Needless to say, she was probably rather emaciated by the time she was rescued from her mom 2 or 3 years later.) Also, in case you're all wondering why she has no wings, being a bat and all, her mom ripped her wing membranes off, too, so all she has left of those are some tattered shreads dangling from her arms.

As a little kid, she was very curious and bubbly and loved to ask questions about everything, but now she's very quiet and reserved around most people, unless she knows and trusts them very well, at which point she shows them her old self. Obviously, she can't talk, and not everyone knows sign language, but between regular sign-language, pseudo-sign language, and plain old body language/facial expressions, she can communicate pretty well with anyone who's willing to "listen." She spends most of her time either absorbed in a good book, hanging around Serendipity (or sometimes Ash, Maho, and/or Lirpa), or helping Aqui out with Zee, as she feels a great deal of connection to both Aqui and Zee for vaious mostly obvious reasons.

She may be terribly disfigured, but she actually still considers herself quite pretty (which she is), and although she covers her disfigured mouth, it's more to keep from scaring people than because she feels disgusted by herself. She rather enjoys picking out assorted pretty scarves and bandanas and whatnot to wrap around her face. She also finds it fun that unlike most bats (who have wing membranes connected to their arms), she's able to wear all kinds of pretty longsleeved shirts. She's not ashamed of her scars in the least, and although she has her own emotional scars from her past, her self-confidence was certainly not among them.

...Hmmm, I could go on talking about her for who knows how much longer, but I think that's enough summary for now. XD I need to make a reference sheet for her, though, because she has so darned many weird bits to her design that are either very subtle or often hidden (like her mouth, wings, broken tail tip, etc.)
