Description
You walk through the building, which Alby told you was called the Homestead, with him and Minho. Alby was going to take you on a tour of the Glade, and Minho had invited himself along. The Homestead was apparently the boys 'house' and they each had their own room, although most of them slept outside anyway. You had also learned that Alby had told the Gladers, which is what the boys were called, that Minho had found someone in the Maze, and that was it.Which means no one knows you're a girl.
You aren't sure how Alby plans on telling 50 boys that they suddenly have a girl trapped with them, and you're especially nervous about how they boys are going to treat you after hearing such news.
You reach the front door of the Homestead when Alby stops you and Minho.
"I'm going to inform everyone of our..." he looks directly at you. "Situation. You two stay here. Minho, when I give you the signal, bring (Y/n) out to the box."
Minho nods, a seriousness spreading across his face. Alby exits the house and heads into the center of the Glade, where a large group of boys is already surrounding it.
"GLADERS!" You hear Alby call, and suddenly, like ants, dozens of boys run over to the box. You take a deep breath, the full weight of your situation crashing down on your shoulders.
"Listen, (Y/n)," Minho says from your left, still watching for the signal. "The guys here, they're all cool, ya know? I mean, they are guys, but you don't have to worry. If Alby tells 'em not to lay a finger on you, they're not gonna lay a finger on you,"
You feel a bit better, but you're still apprehensive. Then you realize, you've already been here overnight, unconscious, with at least five boys knowing you were there, and they hadn't done anything to you. Plus, the boys you've already met seem kind enough. You glance over at Minho, getting a good look at him for the first time. You can tell he's some kind of athlete. He has large muscles which stand out against his tight shirt. He has amazing bone structure and his short hair frames his face well. You look out the door too, just in time to see Alby wave you two over. Terrified, you follow Minho out of the Homestead, hearing the Glade fall into silence upon seeing you. Every boy looks either shocked or overjoyed to have a girl in the Glade.
"Now I've done some thinking," Alby continues ignoring the silence and the fact that no one is looking at him. "And even though she did not come into the Glade like the rest of us, we will treat her like she did. She's one of us now. HEY!" he yells, finally getting fed up with the lack of attention. Minho leads you to Alby's side so the boys will look at least in Alby's general direction.
"Alright, I can't control whether or not you look at her," Alby continues, his patience running thin rapidly. "But I can control whether or not you respect her. You will treat her like you'd treat any other Glader." He doesn't even wait for someone to question that. "Yes, I know, she's a girl. Fantastic. Do what you will with that knowledge. I don't care. But if one of you so much as implies something explicit, I am not afraid to banish you. You shanks get me?"
The Gladers all nod, apparently Minho was right, Alby will be able to protect you.
"Now," Alby continues. "Minho and I are going to take her on the tour. You are going to do your shuckin' jobs. There's no reason to interrupt the tour to talk to her, because you'll get that chance at the bonfire. Good that?" The boys nod once again. "Then get lost!"
The group scatters off to different parts of the Glade.
"Alright, Greenie, let's do this quick. It's past lunch," Alby starts, leading you back towards the Homestead. "This here's the Homestead, where we sleep. Course we already told you that. It's also where we take the sick and injured."
"The Med-jacks, Clint and Jeff, are the ones who patched you up," Minho tells you.
"Remind me to thank them," You say, completely serious. You had been so exhausted and sick, you really had thought you were going to die. You really need to thank the people who brought you back from the dead.
"You can do that at the bonfire," Minho tells you. "It's something we do for all the Greenies. I'll show you around, make sure you know who's who. For instance, I'm Minho, the hot one,"
You scoff at him, but he's not wrong.
"Not now, Minho," Alby says, leading you away from the Homestead. Minho wraps an arm around your shoulders and whispers in your ear.
"That's Alby. He's the grumpy one."
"Minho," Alby warns. "Don't make me regret letting you tag along."
Minho rolls his eyes but obeys nonetheless. Their relationship, where they both respect, yet annoy each other; it's like they're brothers.
"Alright, Greenie, next is the Deadheads," Alby says, leading you and Minho to a forest-y area. "There's not too much here. This is where Gladers come to relax. The Graveyard's in the back, but that's about it around here."
"The Graveyard?" You ask, shivers running up your spine. "You mean people have died here?"
"A giant courtyard populated only by teenage boys surrounded by a maze with monsters inside that seems to be the only way out?" Minho asks sarcastically. "Yeah, people die,"
"That's why we don't let people go into the maze," Alby says. "It's too dangerous,"
You nod, understanding that logic. But then you realize something.
"Minho was in the maze," you point out. Alby sighs.
"Yeah, well, I said people."
You snort, which makes Alby smirk. That's impressive, Alby doesn't smirk very often.
"Oh, and don't let him fool you," Alby says suddenly. "Minho's the only shank around here who can talk to me like that without getting his butt kicked off the Cliff."
You're not sure what the Cliff is, but you're pretty sure you don't want to find out. The title tells you everything you need to know about it.
"Alby, you're scaring her," Minho says, but something in his voice and in Alby's smirk tells you he's not actually concerned about that. "Don't worry, (Y/n). There's nothing to be scared of. No one here's going to push you off the Cliff unless you deserve it. You can relax."
Although you don't appreciate his comment about deserving it, you do feel yourself relaxing already. Alby and Minho both seem like very kind, albeit a bit sarcastic, people and you feel safe around them. You aren't sure why, but you think that ultimately, you're going to like it in the Glade.
