About the shadows, are you aware that you can play around with the console so that you don't have to spend time editing the shadows?
The settings I use are
r_flashlightdepthres 9096
r_projectedtexture_filter 0.2
jpeg_quality 100
the light should be within one meter of the model to prevent grainy shadow.
