Description Most people go to Gigrin because of the Red Kite population but one shot I really wanted to come away with was a Raven in flight so I'm happy with this one!

Enjoy!

From the RSPB:

Raven - Corvus corax

The raven is a big black bird, a member of the crow family. It is massive, bigger than a buzzard. It is all black with a large bill, and long wings. In flight, it shows a diamond-shaped tail. It breeds in the west and north only. Most birds are residents, but some birds, especially non-breeders and young birds wander from their breeding areas but do not travel far.

I have two Ravens that have a nest in the pine tree in my backyard... they're very loud and poop in my pool.

Well done on capture all the details of a black bird, that's surely a challenge with a nice bright sun shinning on them.

Beautiful shot Nick, I would have been chuffed to bits for days if I'd achieved such a great capture.

Thanks Sheryl. There is one on Danny Green's site that I particularly like and I was trying to emulate it (his is better though!) but still I'm definately very pleased with this.

A nice flight shot on a difficult exposure.
You're giving me incentive.
We have 2 Ravens which winter here on the island so I see them dozens of times each day.
I keep intending to make the effort but ..... oh well, we know which road is paved with good intentions.
I do watch them quite a bit. They come to the house (when nobody is in sight) to get the food we throw out for them and most of it is taken and hidden.
We can observe nearly all of the 14 acres here. It's entertaining to watch them try different hiding spots, moving the food, covering it , standing back and inspecting, uncovering, moving, recovering, reinspecting. Sometimes they try 6, 8 & more times before they're satisfied.
And "Yes"; they do go back and dig out their stash when the hunting's poor.

Go for it - I look forward to seeing your shots.

Interesting info on the food hoarding. Cheers.

A coomon yard bird for me but one that I've never photographed in flight satisfactorily. They're fast and they're very black but you've captured this one beautifully showing feather detail. Brilliant!

Wonderfull shot!!!, i can see straight away by the size of the beak the difference between the carrion crow, i must get on these birds.

Thanks David. It's always hard to get a true sense of scale when your viewing something from a distance through a telephoto lens, but when these guys landed next to the buzzards you could clearly see that they are big birds indeed. I'd love to see them closer up.

Yes i bet, I have actually photographed one without knowing LOL. looking back at old photo's i came across
what i at the time though was one of my first Crow shots from Clumber park, looking at the beak its obvious its a Raven.
i might have a trip up there again this summer.

Wonderful shot! After reading your definition of a Raven I think I need to rename my photo. [link]

I love your photography, thank you for sharing.

Pretty good shot! This is so difficult ( for me at least) to catch a raven in flight, they are so fast!
