Pocahontas' actual name was Matoaka. She was between the ages of 10-14 years old when she met John Smith. They did not have a romantic relationship. The writings of John smith would become skewed, romanticized, fetishized and interpreted into plays, books, and other media. Matoaka was a child. She was stolen from her family, became a prisoner of war, sexually assaulted and died far across the ocean. A popular animated film from 1995 has branded a sexualized version of this stolen girl and continues to make profit on on her to this day. Not only that, but that image of her has generated generations of ignorance, redface, racism, and fetishizes Indigenous women further contributing to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) epidemic.
