Description After months of delay, finally I kicked my own ass and finished the tutorial that I promised. I'm going to repeat myself, the illustration itself is not so interesting, but the tutorial focus mainly on lighting and the thought process of myself while doing this piece. Hope it helps! Will do more random tutorials later~!

(btw someone wants to send me a note teaching me how to link a thumbnail for the preview instead? After they change the layout I have no clue how to do it, I tried that "Thumb" textbox and uploaded a thumbnail and paste the number in, but dunno how to "submit" it or update. Anyone?

That's a really neat tutorial. Unfortunately it doesn't help me with my problem. I'm currently trying to paint a picture of a room filled by only a green light source. And I have no idea how to get a lighting in a colour other than your standard white right.

So, you mentioned the "dust particle effect"?
Im interested in learning more about that, any idea where to find a guide on that? Or are there any particular tools in photoshop i havnt noticed that do a similiar thing?

wow, thank you very much for showing everyone how you do your magic *bow*

this tutorial helps a lot in terms of the whole colouring process, however i got 2 n00bish questions *blush*

what do you usually set your pix/inch to

and

what kind of brushes (oil, pastels, chalk etc.) do you use (do you set them on less opacity etc.) looks like oils to me, but im not too sure, im new to this whole photoshop drawing/colouring thing, so i just use the chalk brush =O which is kinda like oils but it has that 'fuzzy' feel to it

nJoo In reply to Slapslovski [2007-05-30 03:44:39 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure what you mean by oil, pastel, etc I usually just use the most default brush in photoshop the circle one, with opacity set to pressure sensitive as for the size, i usually work at 300dpi, probably approx 2000x3000px depending on the dimension ratio, etc

Slapslovski In reply to nJoo [2007-05-30 03:58:27 +0000 UTC]

oh by oil, pastel i mean like brushes in photoshop that imitate the propreties of those, but you answered my questions thank you very much *bow* you rock =]

Great tutorial to read. Even though you did not like the piece, I think it's great for this tutorial too, because of all the dark corners and the structures around. Really shows the creativity that goes into coloring. Now I just gotta remember how to do those lighting streaks (I'm thinking the dodging tool is used somehow). And like you said, the dust particles did bring a little extra life to it. Will you make or use a brush to do this or just sparingly make small dots? Anyway, excellent tutorial. Really thankful for sharing your thoughts and technique with us. The lighting/shadow balacne thing couldn't be true and can be applied in other mediums too. I will definately try to keep these things in mind in the future. Once again thanks man!

This taught me more than any of the other tutorials I've studied. The whole generalizing of it really helps.

btw, what does setting a layer to "multiply" do?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nJoo In reply to jessicasalehi [2007-01-30 01:36:03 +0000 UTC]

it's hard to explain hmm, basically it darkens all the layer below it, so if the bottom layer's red, and u have a multiply layer above it that's grey, then it'll look dark red at the bottom, etc. Play around with it and test it out

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jessicasalehi In reply to nJoo [2007-01-30 13:17:02 +0000 UTC]

Interesting... I've been totally ignoring that whole drop down panel on the layers window...

Thanks, I think I'm going to have fun with this.

great piece of art, the visual aids are all there, but I still dont know from what step to the next what layer you're in, what the layer settings are, or even what program you are using. Clearing these things up might help us understand the process a little better. Thank you for doing this for us though, its a real treat to pick at a cg painting masters brain.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nJoo In reply to Alex0wens [2007-01-30 01:22:52 +0000 UTC]

Ah~ I'll try to make the next tutorial a bit better and clear I use photoshop, and usually I have the linart layer set on multiply, and start painting with a normal layer under, after that I make a new layer ontop of the line layer and start painting over the lines, etc. The lightning layer's are created over the top layer, by using a soft edge brush, or gradient fill and then setting the layer mode to different setting, like overlay, color dodge, etc and to a low opacity. This might sound confusing, but it helps a bit
