Description
My latest piece... hot off the presses. 1/8th scale statue of Spawn done in Super Sculpey and magic sculpt resin. I'll post more pics of him in the morning...This is an animated gif, so click the "download" button on the left to see the full image. It takes a minute to load properly so it doesn't keep skipping around all weird-like...

Really great job with the detail. How would you dry it and paint it? Can you paint it once you mold it, or do you have to let it sit or something. I want to get into this stuff now... Thanks... lol

Thank you! The clay I used here (Super Sculpey) is a polymer clay that hardens when you bake it in your home oven. Once baked the hardened clay takes acrylic paint very well. So what you're actually seeing here is the final sculpture all baked and spray painted with gray automotive primer to even out the color.

Dear holy mother of tomatoes...this freaking fantastic! I admire anyone who can sculpt like that.
The fold in the cloths is wicked. I like what ATLbladerunner, get this baby painted and put it in spectrum...pronto!

Thanks man I really appreciate it! I'm really working hard on honing my sculpting chops, so I think I'm getting better with each sculpt... at least I hope I am...
I wish I could submit this to Spectrum, but Todd McFarlane would have to give me his copyright approval... and unless he wants to produce this piece himself, that's never gonna happen.

I'm pretty sure you got plenty of time left. You could sculpt a original creation or use one of your recent pieces. If your interested here is the link to the entry form [link]
I'm going to try to enter myself

Thanks Prof...He's getting closer. Unfortunately, I don't think I will get much time between yule tide carols and forgetting auld acquaintances to work on him, but hopefully within the early part of '07 I can knock him out...I have the dreaded cape woes much like you guys. And the guantlet to tackle, plus I think I will whack off the hands in favor of some larger ones Q style : D

wow fantastic sculpture..... wish i knew how to make figures like that.... all i can do is mould some clay into a lump

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to A-Zim11 [2006-12-22 09:16:53 +0000 UTC]
Well a lump is where it all starts so you're on the right track! Seriously though all it takes is practice! You're obviously incredibly talented so all you need to do is get familiar with the sculpting materials!

heh thanks i will be sure not to give up now all i need is a place where i can mold my line of created pots that i started in HS!!! BTW this piece ceases to amaze me... and your acrylic pallet tutorial was extreemly helpful given that i use acrylics the most of all mediums... thanks

Thanks dude! Those little skulls took a few hours to do and after sculpting one I knew that I really didn't want to try and sculpt another to match it. So I just molded it and cast a few copies. My momma didn't raise no fool.
I'm glad you like the finished piece!

lmao Quote : mama didnt raise no fool hahaha, yea i bet they did bro, i see the smaller stuff take way longer than the bigger, but i guess it depends on how much detail you want in it. but this peice is just jaw dropping, anyone that has even attempted this medium should be amazed by this peice, by the depth and detail !!! Awsome work man !!!

This is what we had the preview of a few weeks ago, eh? Looks fantastic, NSOS!Great charred flesh texture and the fabric is amazingly detailed. Gonna paint this one too and submit it to Spectrum?

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to ATLbladerunner [2006-12-22 09:09:09 +0000 UTC]
Yep the last few things I've submitted were all Spawn related. This thing has totally been eating up all of my time. I wish I could submit this to Spectrum but I can't since it's copyright protected, and that's a big no-no for them...

ok, here's the breakdown on the american judge:
+ 1.3 for the subject matter: spawn rocks!
- 0.5 for still not giving me a nightwing statue
+ 1.0 for the hamlet pose
+ 0.5 for taking the time to do an animated gif
+ 0.3 for doing cloth
+ 1.0 for doing cloth well
+ 2.5 for the amazing collar-like thingy above his head
+ 2.0 for finally posting something new
- 0.1 for taking so long to do it
- 0.2 for not knowing the definition of morning (psst ... it's prior to noon )
+ 0.3 for using the phrase "all weird-like"
and finally + 1.5 for doing a kick ass job, as always
so a total of 9.6. good job!

Actually, I'm secretly glad that you took ages to do this piece (how long exactly?? Weeks, months, years?!) because I get sick of people telling me that I'm too slow...when I think that I'm a reasonably average speed and I'm only trying to do the best I can you b*****ds! That's at least one reason why I haven't sculpted for so long now. But perhaps with the new found encouragement from my DA chums, things might change! Thanks!
